Chapter 8: The Father Who Bought My Silence

We reached the airport before sunset.

Detective Shaw had already contacted airport security and arranged for officers to monitor the exits.

My mother sat beside me in the back of the police vehicle.

Her hands were clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

"Do you think she'll recognize me?"" she whispered.

I looked at her.

"She's seen your pictures.""

"But pictures aren't the same as a mother.""

I didn't know what to say.

I had spent six years missing a mother I believed was dead.

My sister had spent years missing a mother she had been told never existed.

We entered through a restricted security corridor.

Detective Shaw received an update through her radio.

"Target located near Gate 18.""

We moved quickly.

Then I saw him.

My father stood near a row of airport seats, holding a black briefcase.

Daniel stood beside him.

And between them was a little girl wearing a pink sweater.

She had dark brown hair tied into two uneven ponytails.

Her shoes were untied.

She held a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

I stopped walking.

I knew her face.

The photograph had shown a little girl.

But seeing her in person made everything real.

My sister.

Sofia.

Daniel noticed us first.

His expression changed.

He immediately placed a hand on the girl's shoulder.

"Stay close to me, sweetheart.""

My father turned.

For a moment, he looked genuinely surprised.

Then his face hardened.

"Lena.""

I stepped forward.

"Let her go.""

Marco shook his head.

"You don't understand what's happening.""

"Then explain it.""

"Not here.""

"Where? Another empty coffin?""

His jaw tightened.

My mother moved beside me.

"Marco.""

He looked at her.

Something flickered across his face.

"You should have stayed gone.""

She stared at him.

"You should have left our daughters alone.""

Sofia looked between them.

"Uncle Daniel?""

Daniel crouched.

"Everything is fine, sweetheart.""

But the little girl was staring at my mother.

She tilted her head.

"Are you the lady in my pictures?""

My mother covered her mouth.

"Yes, baby.""

Sofia took one small step forward.

Daniel immediately caught her wrist.

"Don't.""

The girl's eyes filled with confusion.

"Why?""

"Because she's not well.""

My mother flinched.

"Don't you dare.""

I stepped closer.

"Daniel, release her.""

He looked at me.

"You think you can come here and destroy everything I've built?""

"You destroyed it yourself.""

My father moved between us.

"Lena, listen to me.""

I stared at him.

"You lied about Mom.""

"I was protecting you.""

"You lied about Sofia.""

"I gave her a life.""

"You paid people to keep her away from us.""

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked angry rather than frightened.

"You have no idea what your mother did.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Tell her.""

He turned toward her.

"You want the truth?""

"Yes.""

Marco looked at me.

"Your mother was going to destroy the family. She found the accounts, discovered the money, and threatened to take everything.""

"So you tried to kill her?""

"I never wanted her dead.""

"Then why did you sign that photograph?""

He froze.

I watched the color drain from his face.

My mother spoke quietly.

"You thought I would never find it.""

Marco looked toward Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

And suddenly, I understood.

They had both known.

My father continued.

"I was trying to protect the company. You were sixteen. You had no idea what was happening.""

"I was sixteen when you buried my mother.""

He looked at me.

"I was grieving too.""

I laughed.

A horrible, broken sound.

"You were standing at her funeral knowing she was alive.""

He lowered his voice.

"I did what I had to do.""

My mother stepped closer.

"And Sofia?""

Marco looked at the little girl.

"She was never supposed to be involved.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Don't put this on me.""

My father turned sharply.

"Shut up.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You're the one who paid me.""

I stared at him.

My father looked furious.

"You took the money!""

"Because you promised nobody would get hurt!""

"She was supposed to disappear!""

My mother went completely still.

I felt my blood turn cold.

The words had come from my father's mouth.

He had just admitted it.

Detective Shaw stepped forward.

"Marco Alvarez, you're going to need to come with us.""

He looked at her.

"On what grounds?""

"That's going to be determined by investigators. For now, we need you to remain here.""

Two officers approached.

Daniel suddenly grabbed Sofia's hand.

"We're leaving.""

The little girl pulled away.

"No!""

He tightened his grip.

"I said come on.""

Sofia began crying.

"I want my mom!""

My mother dropped to her knees.

"Sweetheart.""

Sofia looked at her.

"Are you really my mommy?""

My mother's face crumpled.

"Yes.""

Sofia released her stuffed rabbit.

It fell to the floor.

Then she ran.

Straight into my mother's arms.

My mother held her as if the entire world had finally returned.

I stood beside them, unable to move.

Sofia looked up at me.

"Who are you?""

I knelt.

"I'm Lena.""

She studied my face.

Then her eyes widened.

"You're my sister?""

I nodded.

She reached out and touched my graduation tassel, which was still hanging from my bag.

"You're the girl in the pictures.""

I smiled through tears.

"Yes.""

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

For the first time in six years, I wasn't just a daughter.

I was a sister.

But the reunion lasted only a few seconds before Detective Shaw received another call.

She listened.

Then she looked at Marco.

"Your business accounts have been frozen.""

My father went pale.

The detective continued.

"And we've obtained a warrant for your office.""

Marco suddenly laughed.

It was a strange, empty sound.

"You think that's enough?""

He looked at me.

"You think your mother told you everything?""

I stood.

"What else is there?""

He leaned closer.

"Ask her why she never told you about Thomas.""

My mother went rigid.

Marco smiled bitterly.

"Ask her why she let you believe I was your biological father.""

I looked at my mother.

Her face told me the answer before she spoke.

I turned toward her.

"Mom?""

She closed her eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

"Your father isn't Marco.""
