Chapter 4: The Name on the Deed

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound in the office was the faint hum of my laptop.

Then Ryan looked at me.

“Who is Mark Bennett?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

I was still staring at the message.

*He forgot who legally owns the house.*

My mother took the phone from my hand and read it again.

“Call him,” she said.

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“Call who?””

“Mark.””

“Why?””

My mother ignored him.

I typed the number from memory.

It had been almost ten years since I’d called it.

I expected silence.

Instead, the phone rang once.

Twice.

Then a calm male voice answered.

“Sarah?””

My throat tightened.

“Mark.””

He was quiet for a second.

“Are you safe?””

I looked at Ryan.

At his pale face.

At the door behind him.

At my mother standing beside me.

“I think I am now.””

Mark exhaled.

“Then I was right to wait until tonight.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“What is this about?””

Mark heard him.

“Is that Ryan?””

I froze.

“Yes.””

There was another pause.

“Sarah, put me on speaker.””

I did.

Mark’s voice filled the room.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Ryan folded his arms.

“Find out what?””

Mark answered him directly.

“That your wife’s legal position is much stronger than you were told.””

Ryan looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

My mother answered this time.

“It means he knows something.””

Ryan scoffed.

“Everyone suddenly knows something except me.””

I flinched.

Mark stayed calm.

“Ryan, your wife’s father left her more than money.””

My husband’s face changed.

I closed my eyes.

My father.

The man who had died when I was twenty-four.

The man whose estate I had barely touched after marrying Ryan because I wanted to build our life together without relying on what my father had left me.

Mark had once told me, You don’t need to use any of it unless you choose to.

I had listened.

Most of it had remained untouched.

“What does my father have to do with this?”” Ryan asked.

Mark sighed.

“Everything.””

I walked to the desk and sat down.

My legs felt weak.

Mark continued.

“Your father knew your mother well. He knew what happened in your family after his parents died. He also knew what would happen if someone tried to interfere with assets he left you.””

Ryan frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“Good,” Mark said.

“What?””

“You’re not supposed to understand until Sarah decides you should.””

The words hit the room like a slap.

Ryan turned toward me.

“Sarah, what did your father leave you?””

I looked at him.

“Nothing you didn’t already know about.””

“That’s not true.””

“I told you about the investment account.””

“You said it was small.””

“It was.””

Mark interrupted.

“No, Sarah.””

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

“The investment account was small.””

He paused.

“The property wasn’t.””

My stomach dropped.

“What property?””

My mother sat down.

Ryan stared.

Mark said, “Your father placed a separate property trust in your name before he died.””

My mouth went dry.

“I thought that was sold.””

“It wasn’t.””

I stood.

“What are you talking about?””

“The house.””

I looked around the office.

Our house.

The one I had bought with Ryan.

The one Diane had always called Ryan’s.

“The house?””

Mark gave a humorless laugh.

“Your father purchased the property through an LLC six months before you married Ryan. After the wedding, he transferred controlling ownership into the trust.””

I felt dizzy.

“But Ryan’s name is on the mortgage.””

“Being on the mortgage and owning the underlying property are not always the same thing.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

Mark replied evenly.

“Not impossible. Documented.””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“Why would Sarah’s father do that?””

Mark didn’t hesitate.

“Because he didn’t trust you.””

Silence.

Ryan looked at me.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“You knew my name wasn’t really on the deed?””

“No.””

“Then how could your father have done this without you knowing?””

“I was twenty-four,” I said.

“I wasn’t involved in everything he did.””

Ryan walked toward the desk.

“Show me.””

Mark laughed softly.

“No.””

Ryan stopped.

“What?””

“I’m not showing you anything.””

“That concerns my home.””

“No,” Mark said.

“It concerns Sarah’s property.””

Ryan’s hands curled into fists.

My mother stood.

“Enough.””

But I was barely listening.

My mind had locked onto one thought.

Diane had been calling this Ryan’s house for years.

She had been trying to control everything in it.

She had been planning visitors.

Rearranging rooms.

Moving my belongings.

And now there was a document hidden in my desk suggesting they planned to move me out.

“Mark,” I said quietly.

“Yes?””

“The relocation agreement.””

“What about it?””

“I found a copy in my desk.””

His voice immediately became serious.

“Do not sign anything.””

“I wasn’t going to.””

“Good.””

“Why does it exist?””

Mark was silent.

Then he said, “Because someone drafted a strategy for removing you from the residence after the baby was born.””

Ryan stepped back.

“I never agreed to that.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew about the custody plan?””

“No.””

“The relocation agreement?””

“No.””

“Your mother had the documents.””

“I don’t know why.””

“You were standing outside my bedroom with her this morning.””

His face changed.

“How do you know that?””

I held up my phone.

“Because someone photographed you.””

Ryan stared at the image.

His lips parted.

“I wasn’t—”

“You were.””

“I was talking to Mom.””

“About what?””

He looked at the floor.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “She wanted to talk about the baby.””

“What about the baby?””

“She thinks you’re going to keep her away from us.””

I felt cold.

“Us?””

“My family.””

“Your family?””

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My daughter hasn’t even been born, and your mother already thinks she can claim her.””

Ryan ran both hands through his hair.

“She’s scared.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She’s planning.””

Mark spoke.

“She has been planning for a while.””

Ryan stared at the phone.

“How would you know?””

“Because she contacted my office.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

Ryan’s expression went blank.

“What?””

Mark continued.

“She asked about Sarah’s inheritance.””

I turned to my mother.

She covered her mouth.

Ryan shook his head.

“That makes no sense.””

“It makes perfect sense,” Mark said.

“She wanted to know what would happen to Sarah’s assets if Sarah became incapacitated during childbirth.””

The room went silent.

I felt the blood leave my face.

“Incapa—”

“I’m sorry,” Mark said.

“That was the question she asked.””

Ryan immediately turned to me.

“I didn’t know.””

I believed him.

That frightened me more.

Because if Ryan truly hadn’t known, then Diane had been operating on her own.

And if she had been operating on her own, she had gotten far enough to contact my father’s attorney.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked Mark.

“Because she didn’t have access to anything. At the time, I assumed it was an unpleasant inquiry.””

“And now?””

“Now she has a second person helping her.””

I looked at Ryan.

His expression tightened.

“Who?””

Mark said, “I don’t know for certain.””

“Then why tell me?””

“Because I received something yesterday.””

“What?””

“A draft power of attorney.””

My heart pounded.

“Whose?””

“Yours.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“My signature?””

“No. An unsigned document prepared for you.””

Ryan whispered, “For what?””

Mark answered.

“Medical decisions. Financial control. Child-related decisions.””

My mother gripped the edge of the desk.

“Who prepared it?””

“I can’t disclose the name without verifying the file.””

Ryan moved closer to the phone.

“Mark, stop playing games.””

“I’m not playing games.””

“Then tell us.””

“There’s one thing I need Sarah to understand first.””

Mark’s voice softened.

“Your father anticipated that a future spouse might try to isolate you from your own assets. He put safeguards in place.””

I looked around the room.

The furniture.

The walls.

The house.

Everything I thought we had built together suddenly felt like a stage set over something much older.

“My father knew?”” I whispered.

“Yes.””

“He knew Ryan might do this?””

“No.””

Mark paused.

“He knew someone might.””

I looked at Ryan.

His face was pale.

“Mark,” I said, “you said someone was helping Diane.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“I’m still confirming it.””

“Confirm it.””

“I will.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Sarah, you can’t seriously believe some anonymous person over your own husband.””

I looked at him.

“You shoved me tonight.””

“I know.””

“Your mother slapped me.””

“I know.””

“Someone has been taking photographs inside this house.””

“I didn’t know.””

“Someone drafted documents to control my money and my daughter.””

“I didn’t do that.””

“I hope you didn’t.””

He stared at me.

That sentence hurt.

I could see it.

But I meant every word.

Mark cleared his throat.

“There’s another reason I called this late.””

I sat straighter.

“What?””

“I checked the property records.””

Ryan looked suddenly uneasy.

“What did you find?””

“The transfer of ownership into Sarah’s trust was finalized eight years ago.””

“So?””

“So the mortgage isn’t the problem.””

I frowned.

“What is?””

Mark’s voice lowered.

“The problem is that someone filed a new document against the property six weeks ago.””

My mother stood completely still.

Ryan whispered, “What document?””

“A claim against the title.””

I looked at my husband.

His eyes went to mine.

Mark continued.

“It was filed by a company neither of you mentioned.””

“What company?”” I asked.

He said the name.

And my entire body went cold.

Because it was the same company Ryan had told me, six weeks earlier, he had started consulting for.

I turned toward him slowly.

Ryan didn’t move.

“You told me that company had nothing to do with us.””

He swallowed.

“Sarah…”

My mother stepped beside me.

“Why is Ryan’s employer filing a claim against your daughter’s house?””

Ryan opened his mouth.

No words came.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

A photograph appeared.

It was taken inside our garage.

Ryan stood beside a man I had never seen before.

And on the workbench between them was the same black box from my jewelry case.

May you like

Under the photograph, only six words appeared:

*Ask your husband what’s inside it.*
