Chapter 9: The Fall Of The Villalobos Family

The photograph destroyed everything.

Twenty years of lies.

Twenty years of pretending.

My father wasn't a stranger.

He was connected to the people who claimed I didn't belong.

My mother spent the night investigating.

By morning, she had the answers.

And they were worse than anyone imagined.

My father worked with the Villalobos family.

But he discovered they were laundering money through their businesses.

He tried to expose them.

So they destroyed him.

And they destroyed my family.

The person who helped them?

Doña Carmela.

She wasn't just Mateo’s mother.

She was the architect.

The woman who had controlled everything from the shadows.

When we confronted her, she didn't deny it.

She sat in her mansion.

The same mansion where she hit me.

The same garden where everyone laughed.

“You came back,” she said.

My mother walked inside.

“I came to end this.””

Doña Carmela smiled.

“You think money gives you power?””

“No.””

My mother looked around.

“Truth does.””

The old woman laughed.

“You have no proof.””

My mother placed a folder on the table.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Documents.

Doña Carmela’s smile disappeared.

“You recorded everything.””

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“My daughter did.””

I realized then.

The moment I entered this house.

The cameras.

The statements.

Everything.

I wasn't just a victim anymore.

I was the witness.

Doña Carmela stood.

“You think the world will believe you?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She stared.

“You’re different.””

I nodded.

“I am.””

The police entered.

This time, they weren't there for my mother.

They were there for her.

Doña Carmela looked at Mateo.

“Son.””

He didn't move.

For the first time in his life, he didn't obey.

“You chose her?””

Mateo looked at me.

Then at his mother.

“I chose the truth.””

They took Doña Carmela away.

But before leaving, she turned to me.

“This isn't over.””

I watched her disappear.

And I realized something.

She was right.

Because there was still one person missing.

My father.

The truth about his death.

And three days later, my mother found the final document.

The one hidden in the safety deposit box.

The one my grandmother protected for twenty years.

It contained a name.

The person who ordered everything.

My mother opened the file.

Then dropped it.

I picked it up.

And my heart stopped.

Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had stood beside me when I had nothing.

Someone who had cried with me.

May you like

Someone who had raised me.

My grandmother.
