Chapter 8: The Guest Nobody Invited

I stared at the photograph.

My hands went cold.

The person circled in the background wasn’t a stranger.

It was Caroline.

The woman Martha wanted Nick to marry.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

The shocking part was where she was standing.

Near the entrance to the ballroom.

Watching.

Recording.

The message had another line.

*“Ask your husband why he never told you she came to the wedding.””*

I looked at Nick.

He immediately noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“I don’t know. Unknown number.””

He zoomed in on the picture.

“That’s Caroline.””

“I know.””

He looked uncomfortable.

And that scared me.

“Nick.””

He looked up.

“There’s something you didn’t tell me.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than the secret.

“When did you find out?””

“After the wedding.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want another painful thing connected to that day.””

I stood.

“That wasn’t your decision to make.””

“I know.””

His voice was quiet.

“I was wrong.””

I wanted to be angry.

But I also understood.

Sometimes people hide things because they want to protect someone.

Even when protection becomes another kind of pain.

“What was she doing there?””

Nick shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then another message appeared.

This time, from the same number.

*“She wasn’t there to congratulate you.””*

A second photo loaded.

It showed Caroline speaking with Martha before the ceremony.

My stomach dropped.

“They were working together.””

Nick looked at the image.

“I thought Caroline left.””

“She didn’t.””

The next morning, we found her.

Caroline agreed to meet us at a small café.

She looked exhausted.

Not like the confident woman Martha always praised.

Like someone who had been carrying guilt.

“I knew this day would come,” she said.

Nick crossed his arms.

“Why were you at our wedding?””

Caroline looked down.

“Because your mother asked me to come.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did she want?””

Caroline swallowed.

“She wanted me to be there in case you changed your mind.””

Nick’s expression hardened.

“She thought I would leave Lily on my wedding day?””

“Yes.””

Caroline looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

She continued.

“She told me she had a plan.””

My stomach tightened.

“What plan?””

Caroline hesitated.

Then she said:

“She wanted to create a scandal.””

Nick leaned forward.

“What kind of scandal?””

“She wanted people to believe Lily wasn’t stable enough to marry into your family.””

I felt sick.

Caroline continued.

“She planned to make Lily look emotional and embarrassed.””

I remembered the braid.

The crowd.

The humiliation.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Caroline nodded.

“Yes.””

Then she pulled something from her bag.

A small recorder.

“She told me everything.””

Nick looked at it.

“Why do you have this?””

“Because I changed my mind.””

She looked ashamed.

“At first, I wanted to help her.””

I understood.

“You wanted Nick.””

She nodded.

“But when I saw what she was willing to do…”

Caroline shook her head.

“I realized I didn’t want a man who could only be mine if another woman was destroyed.””

The recorder contained Martha’s voice.

Planning everything.

Every cruel detail.

Every lie.

We sat there listening.

And somehow, hearing it hurt more than the actual event.

Because it proved something.

The braid wasn’t an accident.

The humiliation wasn’t a mistake.

It was planned.

Nick turned off the recorder.

He looked devastated.

Not because of what Martha did to me.

Because of what she had become.

That evening, we returned home.

Martha was waiting outside our apartment.

She looked terrified.

“You know.””

Nick stepped forward.

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

I held the recorder in my hand.

“Why?””

Martha looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because someone else paid me to destroy your marriage.””
