Chapter 7: The Woman Who Saved My Wife
The hospital smelled of disinfectant and burnt coffee.
Danielle sat in a private room while a nurse checked her blood pressure. Ava was curled beside her, holding her mother's hand.
I stood near the window, trying to understand how the story I'd believed for four years had become something entirely different.
Vanessa had known Danielle was alive.
Robert had imprisoned Danielle.
Daniel had helped him.
And now Danielle was telling me that Vanessa had been helping her escape.
I turned.
“Start from the beginning.””
Danielle looked down at Ava.
“Can we wait until she's asleep?””
I nodded.
For the next hour, I sat beside my daughter while Danielle held her.
Ava asked questions in the small, innocent voice of a child who had waited too long for answers.
“Mommy, why didn't you come home?””
Danielle kissed her forehead.
“I tried, sweetheart.””
“Did you miss my birthday?””
“Every single one.””
“Did you see my drawings?””
Danielle began crying.
“Every one.””
Ava reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was a drawing of three people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
“That's us,” she said.
Danielle pressed the paper against her chest.
“I love it.””
When Ava finally fell asleep, Danielle asked me to close the door.
Then she began.
“Vanessa contacted me eight months after I disappeared.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“Through the ventilation system. She had access to the house because Robert trusted her.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me she knew I was innocent. She told me she wanted to help.””
I sat down.
“Why would she risk that?””
“Because she had discovered what her father had done to your family.””
Danielle explained that Vanessa had been raised by Robert after her mother died.
She'd grown up surrounded by money, private schools, expensive holidays, and people who obeyed her father without question.
But she'd also grown up watching Robert destroy anyone who challenged him.
When Vanessa discovered that he'd arranged James's death, she'd begun secretly collecting evidence.
“She knew about the room?”” I asked.
Danielle nodded.
“She was the one who brought me food. Medicine. Books. Sometimes she stayed for hours, talking through the door.””
“And the key?””
“She stole it from Robert.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Then why did she act so frightened when I found the room?””
“Because she knew Robert had people watching the property. She was afraid he'd discover that she had given you the key.””
I remembered her expression beside the pool.
The panic.
The sudden questions.
The way she'd tried to send me inside.
It all looked different now.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Danielle lowered her eyes.
“Because she was afraid you would never believe her.””
I didn't answer.
She continued.
“Vanessa wanted to expose Robert, but she needed the original trust documents. She thought your father had hidden them somewhere in the house.””
“That's why she wanted to marry me?””
“Robert wanted her to. Vanessa agreed because she believed she could get close enough to retrieve the documents and destroy his plan.””
I stood.
“Was any of it real?””
Danielle looked at me.
“What?””
“Our relationship. The proposal. The wedding.””
She took a long breath.
“Marcus, I can't answer that for her.””
I looked toward the sleeping child.
“I loved her.””
“I know.””
“I trusted her with Ava.””
“I know.””
“And she let me believe she was going to become my wife.””
Danielle reached for my hand.
“Sometimes people do terrible things while trying to survive terrible people.””
I pulled away gently.
“That's not an excuse.””
“No,” she agreed.
“It isn't.””
A knock came at the door.
Detective Brooks entered.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
I stood.
“Did you find Vanessa?””
Brooks nodded.
“She came to the station voluntarily.””
“Where is she?””
“She's waiting to speak with you.””
I looked at Danielle.
She gave me a small nod.
“I think you should hear her.””
Twenty minutes later, Vanessa entered the hospital room.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied back, and her expensive clothes had been replaced by a simple gray sweater and jeans.
For the first time since I'd met her, she looked like an ordinary woman.
Not the elegant fiancée who always knew what to say.
Not the polished socialite who could charm an entire room.
Just Vanessa.
She stopped when she saw Danielle.
“I'm glad you're alive,” she whispered.
Danielle looked at her for a long moment.
“I'm glad you finally found the courage.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I should have done it sooner.””
“Yes,” Danielle replied.
“You should have.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Marcus.””
I didn't move.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
“I know you're angry.””
“Angry?””
I laughed.
“That's what you think this is?””
Her eyes filled.
“I never wanted you to get hurt.””
“You lied to me for two years.””
“I know.””
“You let me propose.””
“I know.””
“You watched me choose a wedding date.””
“I know.””
“Did you ever love me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
I turned away.
She took a small envelope from her bag.
“There's something I need you to see.””
I didn't reach for it.
“What's that?””
“Your father's original letter. The one he left for you.””
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
“Where did you get it?””
“From a safety deposit box my mother opened before she died.””
Vanessa placed the envelope on the table.
It had my name written across the front.
In James Bennett's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter and a photocopy of an old birth certificate.
I read the first paragraph.
Then I stopped.
The certificate listed James Bennett as my father.
But the letter explained that James had legally adopted me when I was six months old.
The original birth record had been sealed.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you bring this?””
She swallowed.
“Because there's another name on the original record.””
I looked down.
A handwritten note had been attached to the photocopy.
*Biological mother: Eleanor Cole.*
I frowned.
“Eleanor?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My mother.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“You're saying…”
Vanessa began crying.
“Marcus, we're not related by blood.””
I stared at her.
“Then why does your father keep saying you're his daughter?””
“Because he raised me as his daughter.””
“But this says—”
“My mother was pregnant with me when she married Robert. But he wasn't my biological father either.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“Who was?””
Vanessa looked at Danielle.
Danielle closed her eyes.
Then Vanessa said the words.
“James Bennett.””
My adoptive father's name.
The man who had raised me.
The man whose grave I'd visited every year.
The man Robert had killed.
Vanessa and I weren't siblings.
We were connected through the man who had raised me.
James had been her biological father.
He had also been the man who adopted me.
I sank into the chair.
“Why didn't anyone tell us?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Robert discovered the truth when I was a teenager. He used it to control me. He told me James had abandoned me and that you were the reason he never came back.””
I stared at her.
“That's why you approached me?””
“At first, yes. Robert wanted me to get close to you because he thought I could manipulate you into signing the estate documents. But when I discovered what he had done to Danielle, everything changed.””
I looked at the woman who had almost become my wife.
“Then why didn't you just tell me?””
“Because I had already lied too much.””
She placed another photograph on the table.
It showed James standing beside a young woman.
Vanessa's mother.
On the back were three words.
*My daughter, Eleanor.*
Vanessa touched the photograph.
“James was my father. He never stopped loving my mother. Robert knew that, and he used it against her.””
I looked at Danielle.
“Is there anything else?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Yes.””
She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“I found this in the room beneath the pool.””
It was a handwritten note.
James's handwriting.
The message was short.
*If Marcus ever discovers the truth, tell him the room was never built to imprison Danielle. It was built to protect the person hidden behind the second wall.*
I looked at Danielle.
“What second wall?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“I do.””
She looked at me.
“Marcus, we need to go back to the house.””
May you like
“Why?””
“Because there's someone else your father was protecting.””
