Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Mentioned
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:13 a.m., I was sitting on the bedroom floor with every financial document from the last seven years spread around me.
The bedroom still smelled faintly of Preston's cologne.
His side of the closet was empty.
He had taken his clothes, watches, and expensive shoes the previous weekend.
He had left behind a framed photograph from our wedding.
In it, he was smiling at me as though I were the only person in the room.
I turned the photograph facedown.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"Amelia, it's two in the morning.""
"I know.""
"Did something happen?""
"I found the incorporation documents.""
I heard him sit up.
"Which documents?""
"H&H Asset Management.""
He was silent.
"Where did you get those?""
"An old folder in my office.""
"Send me everything.""
I scanned the documents and emailed them.
Five minutes later, my phone rang.
"Amelia, listen carefully. Don't confront Richard. Don't confront Preston. And don't sign anything.""
"Why?""
"Because the company was created using your name as the beneficial owner, but the operational control was assigned to Richard.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means the company may legally hold assets in which you have an ownership interest, even though Richard has been controlling the accounts.""
I looked at the documents.
My signature appeared at the bottom of a resolution dated six months after our wedding.
I didn't remember signing it.
"Daniel, I never agreed to become the owner of this company.""
"Then we need to determine whether that signature is authentic.""
I zoomed in.
The handwriting looked like mine.
But something was wrong.
The final letter of my surname had an unusual upward stroke.
I never wrote it that way.
"Can you examine it?""
"Yes. But I need the original.""
I placed the document in a plastic sleeve.
"You're getting it.""
The next morning, I drove to the Hale family's corporate office.
The receptionist recognized me immediately.
"Mrs. Hale! What a surprise.""
"I need to speak with Mr. Richard Hale.""
"Do you have an appointment?""
"No.""
She hesitated.
"He's in a meeting.""
"I'll wait.""
I sat in the lobby for forty minutes.
At 10:35, Richard finally emerged.
He wore a navy suit and carried a leather folder.
When he saw me, his expression changed.
"Amelia.""
"Richard.""
"What are you doing here?""
"I need copies of the original incorporation documents for H&H Asset Management.""
He looked at the receptionist.
"Why?""
"Because my name appears on them.""
Richard laughed.
"You're going through a divorce. Don't confuse yourself with corporate matters.""
"I'd like the original shareholder resolutions.""
"Those aren't relevant to your divorce.""
"Then providing them shouldn't be a problem.""
His smile disappeared.
"Listen carefully. Preston has enough to deal with without you creating unnecessary trouble.""
I stood.
"I haven't created anything, Richard. I'm asking for documents.""
He stepped closer.
"You've been part of this family for seven years. We treated you well. We gave you a beautiful home, vacations, opportunities. Don't make the mistake of thinking that gives you a claim over everything we've built.""
I held his gaze.
"Did you forge my signature?""
The hallway went silent.
Richard's face hardened.
"Watch your accusations.""
"Then show me the original documents.""
He leaned toward me.
"Leave, Amelia.""
I picked up my bag.
"Gladly.""
As I reached the elevator, I heard him say something to the receptionist.
"Make sure nobody gives her access to anything.""
The elevator doors closed.
I took out my phone.
I had recorded the entire conversation.
Daniel examined the documents two days later.
He worked from a modest office above a tax preparation business, with a desk covered in spreadsheets and a coffee mug that read TRUST BUT VERIFY.
He placed my signature beside the one on the corporate resolution.
"Look here.""
He pointed to the final letters of my surname.
"Your natural signature has a slight downward angle. This one rises sharply.""
"So it's forged?""
"Possibly. But a handwriting expert would need to confirm it.""
He moved to the next page.
"This is more interesting.""
The resolution authorized Richard to manage the company on my behalf.
A second document authorized transfers to affiliated investment entities.
"How much money?"" I asked.
Daniel turned his laptop toward me.
A spreadsheet appeared.
"Based on the records we've found so far, approximately $1.8 million has passed through the company.""
I stared at the number.
"Where did it come from?""
"Several sources. Rental income. Investment proceeds. Transfers from your joint household account.""
"Why would money from our household account be transferred into a company I supposedly own?""
"That's the question.""
He scrolled farther.
Then stopped.
"Amelia, do you recognize this account?""
I leaned closer.
It was a bank account ending in 7319.
I recognized the last four digits.
It was the account I had used during my first two years of marriage.
Preston had asked me to transfer my savings into it when we were buying the house.
He had told me it would simplify our finances.
I had transferred $86,000.
Money I had earned before we married.
Money from the sale of my old apartment and years of savings.
The account had disappeared from our household records after Preston said the bank had consolidated everything.
"That money was mine," I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"According to these records, the balance was moved into H&H Asset Management.""
"How much is left?""
He opened another file.
"That's where things become complicated.""
He turned the screen.
A transfer of $420,000 had been made to an entity called Hale Family Holdings.
The transaction date was eleven months earlier.
The description read: BENEFICIAL INTEREST RESTRUCTURING.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"It means someone may have transferred ownership interests from one company to another.""
"Without my permission?""
"That's what we need to establish.""
I sat back.
For seven years, I had believed the Hales were wealthy because Richard was a brilliant businessman.
Now I was beginning to suspect that some of their wealth had been built using money they had never intended to return.
That evening, Preston called.
I almost didn't answer.
"Hello?""
"Where have you been?""
I looked at the clock.
"At home.""
"Richard says you went to the office.""
"That's correct.""
"What were you doing there?""
"Requesting documents.""
He sighed.
"Amelia, this is exactly what I wanted to avoid.""
"Then why did you file financial disclosures that omit an entire company?""
Silence.
"What company?""
"H&H Asset Management.""
He laughed.
"That has nothing to do with you.""
"My name is on the incorporation documents.""
"Those are old administrative records.""
"With my signature.""
"Then you must have signed them at some point.""
"I didn't.""
His voice became colder.
"Listen. My father is not someone you want to accuse without proof.""
"That's why I'm collecting proof.""
"You're making a serious mistake.""
I looked at the wedding photograph lying facedown on the bedroom dresser.
"Preston, I have one question.""
"What?""
"Why did you transfer my savings into that company?""
He didn't answer.
I could hear traffic in the background.
Then he said, "You should stop listening to whoever is advising you.""
"I haven't told you who's advising me.""
The line went quiet.
A moment later, he hung up.
I lowered the phone.
For the first time, I was certain.
Preston knew exactly what I was investigating.
And he was frightened.
The next morning, an envelope appeared beneath my apartment door.
There was no return address.
Inside was a single printed photograph.
It showed Richard standing outside a bank with Martin Voss.
The date stamp indicated it had been taken eleven months earlier.
On the back, someone had written six words.
*Ask Martin who signed the transfer.*
I turned the photograph over.
Then my phone rang.
An unfamiliar woman spoke.
"Mrs. Hale?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Claire Bennett. I used to work for your father-in-law.""
I frowned.
"What do you want?""
"I think you should know that Richard wasn't the only person who knew about the missing money.""
"Who else?""
May you like
She took a shaky breath.
"Your husband.""
