Chapter 9: The Recording That Was Supposed To Destroy Me

For two days, I lived with the fear of a recording I had never heard.

That was the cruelest part.

Not knowing.

A lie can hurt you.

But a lie wrapped around a piece of evidence can make you question your own memory.

I knew what happened the night Fiona was born.

I knew the exhaustion.

The pain.

The fear.

The overwhelming love that arrived the second they placed her in my arms.

But what if they had taken one moment?

One sentence.

One tearful confession from a terrified new mother.

And twisted it into something else?

That was what Wendy was counting on.

Not the truth.

The appearance of truth.

Amanda, my lawyer, told me not to contact Wendy.

Not Luca.

Not my father.

“Let them show their hand,” she said.

But waiting was torture.

Because while I was sitting there trying to breathe, they were probably telling their version of the story.

The version where I was unstable.

Where I was difficult.

Where everyone around me was just trying to help.

I hated that phrase more than anything.

Trying to help.

People had used it as an excuse while hurting me.

Luca came to Rachel’s house that evening.

I almost didn’t let him in.

Almost.

But I wanted answers.

Real ones.

Not the ones he gave when he was trying to protect himself.

He stood in the doorway.

He looked different.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the confidence he had carried for months had finally disappeared.

“Can we talk?””

I stepped aside.

“Five minutes.””

He nodded.

That was all he got.

We sat in the living room.

The same room where he once held Fiona during movie nights.

The same room where he promised me we would always protect her.

Funny how people can make promises before they know what they’re capable of.

“Your mother has a recording,” I said.

His face changed.

A small movement.

But enough.

“You knew.””

He looked down.

“Jessi…”

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

My chest tightened.

“What is on it?””

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

“You expect me to believe you don’t know what your mother has been using as evidence against me?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“She played a clip for me.””

My heart sank.

“What clip?””

He swallowed.

“From the hospital.””

“Where?””

“Your room.””

I looked away.

The hospital.

That room was supposed to belong to me.

To us.

To the moment Fiona entered the world.

And Wendy had turned it into a weapon.

“What did I say?””

Luca’s face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

“I don’t remember everything.””

“Try.””

He closed his eyes.

“You were crying.””

I waited.

“You said you were scared.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“You said you weren’t sure you could do this.””

My heart stopped.

Because I remembered.

I remembered that.

I remembered lying there after thirty hours of labor.

My body exhausted.

My emotions everywhere.

I remembered looking at Luca and saying:

“What if I’m not good enough?””

That was not the same thing.

Not even close.

I looked at him.

“You know what I meant.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because Mom said it showed you were overwhelmed.””

“I was overwhelmed.””

“Yes.””

“Because I had just given birth.””

“I know.””

“Because I loved my daughter so much I was terrified of failing her.””

“I know.””

My voice became sharper.

“Then why did you let her use it?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because I was afraid.””

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that had followed me through every betrayal.

“I was afraid.””

I leaned forward.

“Luca, everyone is afraid.””

He looked up.

“But good people don’t use fear as permission to hurt others.””

He had no answer.

The next morning, Amanda called me.

“Jessi, we need to meet.””

Her voice was serious.

I knew immediately.

Something had happened.

“What is it?””

“I received a copy of the recording.””

My entire body went cold.

“From who?””

“Wendy’s attorney.””

Of course.

She wanted me to hear it.

She wanted me scared.

“When?””

“Today.””

I drove to Amanda’s office with my hands shaking.

Not because I thought the recording would prove them right.

Because I knew how powerful a distorted truth could be.

Amanda placed a small audio file on her computer.

“This is the original file they provided.””

I nodded.

“Play it.””

She clicked.

Static.

Then my own voice.

Weak.

Exhausted.

“I don’t know if I can do this.””

My heart tightened.

Then Luca’s voice.

“You can.””

My younger self cried.

“What if I’m not enough?””

A pause.

Then my voice again.

“I don’t want to hurt her.””

Amanda paused the audio.

I looked at her.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

She clicked forward.

The next part played.

My voice.

“If I can’t protect her, what kind of mother am I?””

Silence.

Then Luca.

“You’re already protecting her.””

I closed my eyes.

The memory came back.

The room.

The lights.

The feeling of holding Fiona for the first time.

It wasn’t a mother rejecting her child.

It was a mother terrified because she loved her child.

Amanda stopped the recording.

“Do you notice anything?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“There are cuts.””

My heart skipped.

“What?””

She replayed the beginning.

Then the end.

“You can hear the background noise change.””

I listened.

She was right.

A small difference.

Almost invisible.

But there.

“They edited it.””

Amanda nodded.

“Yes.””

Relief hit me.

But only for a second.

“Can we prove it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She smiled slightly.

“Because they made a mistake.””

She opened another file.

A longer audio recording.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your friend Rachel sent it.””

My eyes widened.

“She found it?””

Amanda nodded.

“She found the original video file from the hospital backup.””

The screen showed a timestamp.

The recording was longer.

Much longer.

Amanda pressed play.

This time, the audio continued past the part Wendy used.

My voice.

Crying.

“I’m scared.””

Luca’s voice.

“I know.””

My voice.

“What if I become like my parents?””

My heart stopped.

Because this was the part I had forgotten.

The part after.

The part Wendy removed.

Luca’s voice came next.

“You won’t.””

A pause.

Then:

“You’re already doing what your mother never did.””

I covered my mouth.

Because Luca had said that.

He had comforted me.

He had believed in me.

Then Amanda played the final seconds.

My voice.

Quiet.

Barely audible.

“But what if one day I’m not enough?””

And Luca answered:

“Then we’ll figure it out together.””

The recording ended.

I sat there silently.

Because the evidence wasn’t just proof that Wendy lied.

It was proof that Luca once knew the truth.

He knew I was scared.

He knew I loved Fiona.

He knew I wasn’t dangerous.

And somehow, years later, he allowed someone to rewrite that moment.

That evening, Luca came to see me again.

This time, I didn’t invite him.

He was standing outside when I arrived.

“You know,” I said.

His face changed.

“What?””

“The recording.””

He looked down.

Amanda had already warned me not to reveal everything.

But I wanted him to know.

“You knew she edited it.””

He went still.

“I suspected.””

I laughed.

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let her use it?””

He looked broken.

“I was wrong.””

I stared at him.

The words sounded small.

Too small.

“You weren’t just wrong.””

I stepped closer.

“You were willing to believe the worst about me because it made your life easier.””

His eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

For the first time, I believed he meant it.

But regret was not the same as repair.

“I loved you.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice softened.

“You don’t.””

I looked back at the house.

At the place where Fiona slept.

“I loved the man who held my hand when she was born.””

Luca swallowed.

“I was that man.””

“You were.””

A pause.

“But then you became someone else.””

The silence between us was painful.

Then he whispered:

“Is there anything I can do?””

I looked at him.

And the answer came easily.

“Yes.””

Hope appeared on his face.

“Tell the truth.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

“Not to me.””

I looked at him.

“To everyone.””

His face changed.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

His mother.

My father.

Everyone who believed their story.

“I can’t undo what happened.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You can’t.””

My phone buzzed.

Amanda.

A message.

*Wendy filed an emergency custody request this afternoon. Hearing scheduled in 48 hours.*

I showed Luca.

His face went pale.

Because now there was no more hiding.

No more explanations.

No more private conversations.

The war they started was no longer private.

It was in court.

And when I looked at Luca’s expression, I realized something.

For the first time since this began…

May you like

He wasn’t afraid of me leaving.

He was afraid of what he had helped create.
