Chapter 8: The Secret Behind My Father's Name

I read the birth certificate three times.

My name.

My date of birth.

My mother's name.

But beneath the section marked FATHER was a name I had never seen before.

Thomas Sterling.

I looked up.

"Who is Thomas Sterling?""

Robert's lips trembled.

My father didn't move.

He was staring at the document as if someone had placed a loaded weapon on the table.

I turned toward him.

"Daddy?""

He looked at me.

His eyes were wet.

"Sweetheart, sit down.""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"Tell me what this means.""

Robert lowered his head.

"Thomas Sterling was Arthur's older brother.""

The room tilted.

Arthur's brother.

The uncle of Marcus.

My father stood silently.

I looked between them.

"Are you telling me I'm related to Marcus?""

"No," my father said immediately.

Robert interrupted.

"Not by blood.""

My father turned sharply.

"Robert, stop.""

But I stepped forward.

"Nobody is stopping until I understand.""

My father took a breath.

Then he sat down.

"Your biological father was Thomas Sterling. He died before you were born.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your mother asked me not to.""

"What?""

My father looked down.

"Your mother was married to Thomas. They separated before you were born. He died in a car accident when she was pregnant.""

My hands were shaking.

"Then how did you become my father?""

"Your mother and I had known each other for years. After Thomas died, she was alone and frightened. I loved her. I promised her I would raise you as my own.""

I looked at the certificate again.

"So my entire life...""

"Nothing about the love I gave you was false," he interrupted.

I looked at him.

He continued, his voice breaking.

"I was there when you took your first steps. I held you when you had nightmares. I paid for your education.

I taught you to drive. I sat beside your hospital bed when you had your appendix removed.""

He swallowed.

"I never once thought of you as anything other than my daughter.""

Tears blurred my vision.

"Daddy...""

He reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

"But why did Marcus know?""

Robert answered.

"Because Arthur found out years ago.""

My father looked at him.

"How?""

"Thomas's old family records. Arthur discovered that Nia was his brother's daughter.""

I felt sick.

"Marcus knew?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

I stepped away from the table.

"Then why did he marry me?""

Robert hesitated.

"Because Arthur believed you had a claim to part of the Sterling family estate.""

I stared at him.

"What estate?""

"Thomas left behind shares in a property company. They were held in a trust until his biological child reached adulthood.""

My father slowly stood.

"Those shares were transferred years ago.""

"Not all of them," Robert replied.

Patricia opened the document.

"How much is involved?""

Robert answered.

"Approximately $12 million.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

Twelve million dollars.

The money my father had given me.

The wedding check.

The forged authorization.

Suddenly, all the pieces began falling into place.

"Arthur wanted my trust because of the inheritance.""

"Yes," Robert said.

"And the wedding gift was designed to make me sign the financial documents.""

"Yes.""

"Marcus knew my biological father was his uncle.""

Robert nodded.

I looked at my father.

"Did you know about the inheritance?""

He shook his head.

"Your mother told me Thomas had left something for you, but she never wanted to discuss it. I believed it had been settled years ago.""

Patricia examined the birth certificate.

"This document needs independent verification.""

Robert nodded.

"I have the original estate correspondence.""

He placed another folder on the table.

Inside was a letter from a law firm.

It stated that Thomas Sterling's shares had been held in a trust for his biological child.

The trust had never been properly distributed.

Instead, the company had continued issuing dividends into a holding account controlled by Arthur.

My father read the letter.

His jaw tightened.

"They've been collecting her inheritance.""

"For years," Robert admitted.

I looked at him.

"And you knew?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

Robert hesitated.

"With dividends and property appreciation, the current value may be closer to fifteen million.""

I felt dizzy.

Fifteen million dollars.

I had spent my life believing my father had built everything I needed through hard work and love.

He had.

But somewhere in the background, another family had been stealing money that legally belonged to me.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus.

It came from another unknown number.

*Nia, I know Robert is there. Don't believe everything he tells you.*

I showed Patricia.

She took a screenshot.

Another message arrived.

*Your father has been lying to you for twenty-nine years.*

I looked at my father.

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask him why your mother never told you who your real father was.*

I put the phone down.

"Daddy, is there anything else?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He removed an old photograph.

It showed my mother standing beside a young man with dark hair.

The man was holding a baby.

Me.

On the back, my mother's handwriting read:

*Thomas and Nia. The day I promised her she would always be loved.*

I stared at the photograph.

"Why did you keep this?""

"Because I couldn't throw it away.""

My father looked at me.

"Your mother loved Thomas. But she also knew he had become involved with people who wanted his family's money. Before he died, he told her that if anything happened to him, she needed to protect you.""

I swallowed.

"Did he know he was going to die?""

"No. But he was afraid.""

Robert interrupted.

"Thomas didn't die accidentally.""

My father turned.

"What?""

Robert looked down.

"I shouldn't have said anything.""

"Robert.""

He closed his eyes.

"Arthur arranged the car.""

The room went completely silent.

My father grabbed the table.

"What are you saying?""

"Thomas had discovered the same financial fraud. He was preparing to remove Arthur from the company. The night before the accident, he told Arthur he was taking the records to the authorities.""

I felt cold.

"Was he murdered?""

Robert shook his head.

"I don't know. But Arthur had been drinking, and his car was seen near the intersection where Thomas crashed.""

Patricia stood.

"That's a serious allegation.""

"I know.""

"Do you have evidence?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

He reached into the envelope and removed a small photograph.

It showed Arthur standing beside a damaged black sedan.

A date was printed beneath it.

The day Thomas died.

My father stared at the photograph.

Then he looked at his brother.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Robert's voice broke.

"Because Arthur told me if I spoke, Daniel would lose everything.""

My father looked at me.

Then at the photograph.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Finally, he spoke.

"Robert, you're going to tell the authorities everything.""

Robert nodded.

"I will.""

Patricia collected the documents.

"We'll arrange a formal statement.""

But before anyone could move, my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a private number.

I answered.

A man's voice came through.

"Hello, Nia.""

Marcus.

"How did you get this number?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"What do you want?""

"I want you to stop.""

I looked at the others.

Marcus continued.

"You've heard enough stories. You've seen enough documents. Come home, and we can fix this.""

I laughed once.

"Fix what? The money? The forged signature? Your first wife?""

His voice sharpened.

"Don't talk about Rebecca.""

"Why? Because she knows what you did?""

Silence.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Rebecca didn't die because of me.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then who killed her?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Your father knows.""

The call ended.

I turned toward Daniel.

He was standing beside the window.

His face was pale.

And when I asked him what Marcus meant, he finally revealed the one secret he had kept from me.

"Your mother was with Thomas the night he died.""
