Chapter 7: The House Was Never Supposed to Be Mine
Jonathan arrived at Rachel's house the following morning.
He carried a leather briefcase and a thick stack of documents.
I had spent most of the night reviewing everything Vanessa had given me.
Every email revealed another piece of the plan.
Margaret had arranged introductions.
Daniel had moved money.
And someone had apparently been preparing to sell the house I had lived in for six years.
Jonathan sat across from me.
"First, I want you to understand that we're not going to assume every document is legally effective just because it exists.""
I nodded.
"But?""
"But we have serious questions about the signatures, the loan, and the movement of your inheritance.""
He opened his briefcase.
"Have you ever signed a document transferring ownership of your home?""
"No.""
"Have you signed anything authorizing Daniel to sell it?""
"No.""
"Have you ever agreed to become a guarantor for Carter Family Holdings?""
"Never.""
He made notes.
"Good. We'll need the original documents and a handwriting examination if the signatures are disputed.""
I handed him Vanessa's email.
He read it carefully.
Then he looked up.
"This is important.""
"Can they sell my house without me?""
"We need to confirm how the property is titled and whether any authority was granted. But based on what you've told me, I would not assume Daniel has the right to proceed.""
He placed the email inside a folder.
"There's another matter. The company loan.""
I looked at him.
"What about it?""
"The lender has apparently received paperwork identifying you as a personal guarantor.""
My stomach tightened.
"Can they come after me?""
"Not simply because your name appears on a document. If you never authorized the agreement, that is something we can challenge. But we need to act quickly.""
He showed me a printed notice.
It was a letter from the lender.
The company had missed two payments.
A default notice had already been issued.
I stared at the amount.
$310,000.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
"Daniel knew about this?""
"Almost certainly. The notice was sent to your home address.""
I looked at the envelope.
My name was printed beside Daniel's.
But I had never seen it.
"Where was it delivered?""
"According to the records, it was delivered here.""
I looked toward the front door.
Daniel must have collected it.
Jonathan closed the folder.
"Emily, I want you to do three things. Keep copies of everything. Secure your personal identification and financial records. And do not allow Daniel access to any new accounts you open.""
I nodded.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Why would he do this?""
Jonathan paused.
"Sometimes people make increasingly reckless decisions to hide earlier ones. We need to establish the facts before deciding what motivated him.""
That afternoon, I received a call from the lender.
A woman introduced herself as Patricia.
"Mrs. Carter, I'm calling regarding the outstanding loan with Carter Family Holdings.""
"I've never taken out a loan with that company.""
There was a pause.
"Our records indicate that you're listed as a guarantor.""
"I never signed anything.""
"Then I recommend you submit a formal dispute. I can provide the reference number.""
I wrote it down.
Before ending the call, Patricia added something.
"There's one other thing you should know.""
"What?""
"The loan application included a copy of your identification.""
My fingers tightened around the pen.
"Who submitted it?""
"Your husband.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was there anything else?""
"Yes. The application included a residential address and a declaration that you were aware of the company's financial position.""
"I wasn't.""
"I understand. You'll need to raise that with our investigations department.""
After the call, I sat in silence.
Daniel hadn't simply used my name.
He had used my identity to make his business appear more secure.
That evening, Margaret called.
I almost didn't answer.
But I wanted to hear what she would say.
"Emily, darling.""
Her voice was sweet.
Too sweet.
"Hello, Margaret.""
"Daniel tells me you're upset.""
"That's one way to describe it.""
She sighed.
"I think you've misunderstood the situation.""
"Which situation?""
"The financial arrangements.""
I looked at the documents on the table.
"Did you witness a loan agreement carrying my signature?""
She was quiet.
Then she said, "Daniel explained everything to me.""
"That's not what I asked.""
"Emily, your marriage is already under enormous strain. Don't make things worse.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"You knew about Vanessa.""
A pause.
"Yes.""
"You knew about Noah.""
"Yes.""
"You knew Daniel was using my inheritance.""
"Emily, please—"
"And you helped him.""
Her voice sharpened.
"I was trying to protect my son.""
I laughed.
"From what? His own responsibilities?""
"You don't understand the pressure Daniel has been under.""
"Then why didn't you help him with his pressure instead of helping him deceive me?""
She inhaled sharply.
"You're being selfish.""
I looked down at Lily.
My daughter was sleeping peacefully.
"Margaret, I was in labor. Your son refused to take me to the hospital. And you still think I'm the selfish one?""
Silence.
Then she said something I would never forget.
"Well, Daniel had obligations elsewhere that night.""
My heart stopped.
"Elsewhere?""
She seemed to realize her mistake.
"I didn't mean—"
"Where was he?""
"I have to go.""
"Margaret!""
The call ended.
I sat there staring at the phone.
Daniel had been somewhere else that night.
Not preparing a presentation.
Not working.
Somewhere else.
And Margaret knew exactly where.
I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
"Emily?""
"Do you know where Daniel was the night I gave birth?""
There was a pause.
Then she whispered, "Yes.""
"Where?""
"At my house.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"He came over around seven. He said he couldn't go to the hospital because he had promised to spend the evening with Noah.""
I gripped the phone.
"He knew I was in labor.""
"Yes.""
"Did you tell him to go?""
"Of course I did. I told him you needed him.""
"What did he say?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she repeated his words.
"He said you had doctors, nurses, and a hospital full of people. He said I had Noah, and Noah needed his father.""
I felt something break inside me.
The man who had promised to protect our daughter had chosen another household while I was begging for help.
"Emily?"" Vanessa whispered.
I couldn't answer.
Then she added, "There's something else. Margaret was there too.""
I looked up.
"Margaret?""
"Yes. She came to see Noah that evening. She knew you were giving birth.""
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
The betrayal was no longer just Daniel's.
It was a family decision.
And they had all agreed that I could be left alone.
Then Vanessa said something else.
"Emily, Daniel told me that he was going to bring Noah to your house this weekend.""
I froze.
"Why?""
"He said he wanted the children to grow up together.""
I looked toward the nursery.
"Did he say anything about me?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"He said you would eventually have to accept it.""
At that moment, a car pulled into the driveway.
I looked through the window.
Daniel stepped out.
May you like
And in the passenger seat was Margaret.
They were both carrying folders.
