Chapter 10: The Woman Who Walked Out of the Fire

The courtroom was packed.

Reporters filled the back rows. Company executives occupied the seats near the front. Two security officers stood beside the entrance.

Preston arrived at 9:15 a.m.

He wore a charcoal suit and a blue silk tie.

The same kind he had worn the morning he called me repulsive.

Cassidy walked beside him.

She wore a cream-colored dress and held a leather handbag against her stomach.

When she saw me, her expression tightened.

Preston approached.

“Vivian.””

I looked at him.

“Good morning.””

He glanced at Gideon.

“Can we talk?””

“No.””

His jaw flexed.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

I almost smiled.

“That's what you said when I refused to stay home.””

He leaned closer.

“You have no idea how complicated this is.””

I met his eyes.

“I know exactly how complicated it is. That's why I brought the documents.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Inside the courtroom, Judge Reeves entered.

He took his seat and reviewed the files.

“Let's proceed.””

Margaret Ellis stood.

“Your Honor, we request immediate dismissal of the petition seeking to transfer Mrs. Hale's voting authority.””

Judge Reeves adjusted his glasses.

“On what grounds?””

“Because the petition relies on fabricated medical evidence and a forged ownership transfer.””

Preston's attorney rose.

“Objection. The medical assessment was conducted by a licensed physician.””

Margaret handed the document to the clerk.

“Then perhaps the court would like to examine the payment records showing that the physician received eighty-five thousand dollars from a company connected to the petitioner's mistress.””

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

Cassidy lowered her head.

Judge Reeves struck the desk.

“Order.””

Margaret continued.

“We also have evidence that the original ownership ledger was deliberately removed from Mrs. Hale's property after the petitioner became aware of its location.””

Preston stood.

“That's a lie!””

The judge looked at him.

“Mr. Hale, sit down.””

Preston reluctantly lowered himself into his chair.

Margaret called Daniel Cross.

He presented the recovered security footage.

The courtroom watched Preston enter my mother's house.

They watched him remove the ledger.

They watched Cassidy stand beside him.

Then the audio played.

She can't prove anything.

She won't get the chance.

The room became silent.

Judge Reeves turned toward Preston.

“Do you deny that this is you?””

Preston looked at his attorney.

“I'd like to reserve my response.””

Margaret nodded.

“Then let's examine the original share ledger.””

She placed the document on the evidence table.

“The Whitmore Family Trust owns fifty-one percent of Hale & Sterling. The twenty-three percent transfer was temporary and never legally completed.””

Judge Reeves examined the papers.

Preston's attorney stood.

“Your Honor, we dispute the authenticity of this document.””

Margaret remained calm.

“We anticipated that objection. The document has been authenticated by two independent handwriting experts and corroborated by the original witnesses.””

She called Victor Lang.

He entered the courtroom wearing a dark suit.

Preston went pale.

Victor took the stand.

He explained the original financial arrangement, the temporary share transfer, and the unauthorized movement of company assets.

Then he described the night of the fire.

I sat perfectly still.

He told the court how Preston had disabled the alarm system through a contractor, locked the fire door, and left me unconscious near the stairwell.

The room was so quiet that every word seemed to echo.

When Margaret asked whether Preston had carried me out of the building, Victor shook his head.

“No.””

“Who did?””

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw her lying on the floor. She was still breathing.””

He looked toward me.

“I knew I couldn't save Samuel. But I could save her.””

I lowered my eyes.

For five years, I had carried gratitude toward the wrong man.

Now the truth was finally being spoken aloud.

Margaret called Dr. Morris next.

She presented the original medical notes and the evidence of the forged psychological assessment.

Then she described the pressure she had received from Preston's legal representatives.

Judge Reeves looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Finally, Margaret called the last witness.

Gideon Ashford.

He walked to the stand.

Preston's attorney stood.

“Mr. Ashford, you have a substantial financial interest in Hale & Sterling, correct?””

“Yes.””

“And you have known Mrs. Hale for years?””

“Yes.””

“Would you describe your relationship as personal?””

Gideon paused.

“I knew her mother well. I have always respected her family.””

“Is it true you have been attempting to remove Mr. Hale from his executive position?””

“Yes.””

“Because you wanted control of the company?””

“No.””

The attorney raised an eyebrow.

“Then why?””

Gideon looked directly at the judge.

“Because Mr. Hale used the company to steal from the family that created it. He attempted to transfer ownership through forged documents.

He arranged for a physician to falsely question his wife's mental capacity. And he appears to have played a role in a fire that nearly killed her.””

He paused.

“I invested in Hale & Sterling because I believed in Eleanor Whitmore's vision. I refuse to watch her daughter be destroyed by the man she once trusted.””

The judge looked toward Preston.

“Mr. Hale, would you like to respond?””

Preston stood.

His face was flushed.

“Your Honor, this is a personal vendetta. My wife has been unstable since the accident. She has become obsessed with destroying my career because I want a divorce.””

I looked at him.

He continued.

“She has been manipulated by Gideon Ashford. She doesn't understand business. She doesn't understand the financial arrangements. She doesn't even understand what happened that night.””

I slowly stood.

“May I speak?””

The judge nodded.

I walked toward the witness area.

“Preston, you keep telling people I don't understand.””

He looked at me.

“Vivian, don't.””

I continued.

“I don't understand how a man can watch his wife undergo thirteen surgeries and then tell her that her scars disgust him.””

His jaw tightened.

“I don't understand how someone can promise to love a woman forever and then spend five years planning to steal her inheritance.””

I took a breath.

“And I don't understand how someone can leave a woman behind a locked fire door, watch her nearly die, and then spend the next five years pretending he saved her.””

Preston shook his head.

“You're lying.””

I turned toward the judge.

“But I understand one thing very clearly.””

I placed my mother's letter beside the ownership ledger.

“My mother built this company. She left it to me. And I will not allow the people who betrayed her to decide what happens to her legacy.””

The judge remained silent for several seconds.

Then he addressed the room.

“Based on the evidence presented, this court finds sufficient grounds to dismiss the petition seeking control of Mrs. Hale's trust.””

Preston closed his eyes.

The judge continued.

“The temporary authority claimed by Mr. Hale is invalid. The disputed share transfers will be frozen pending a full financial investigation.””

He looked toward the prosecutor seated near the back.

“Furthermore, the evidence concerning the fabricated medical assessment, fraudulent transfers, and alleged obstruction related to the original fire investigation will be referred for criminal review.””

Cassidy began crying.

Preston stood abruptly.

“This is insane!””

The judge struck the desk.

“Mr. Hale, sit down.””

But Preston didn't.

He looked directly at me.

“You think you've won?””

I didn't answer.

He stepped toward the table.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you!””

I stared at him.

“What did you sacrifice, Preston?””

He opened his mouth.

“You—”

“Your reputation? Your career? Your money?””

My voice remained steady.

“I sacrificed my skin to pull you out of a burning building. I sacrificed five years trying to love the man I thought you were.””

I looked at his hands.

“And you couldn't even sacrifice your pride long enough to treat me like a human being.””

He looked away.

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

The officers approached.

“Mr. Hale, we need you to accompany us.””

His face changed.

“On what grounds?””

The lead officer read from a document.

“An arrest warrant has been issued in connection with the financial fraud investigation and new evidence related to the original fire.””

Cassidy suddenly stepped away from him.

“Preston, you told me none of this would happen!””

He turned.

“Shut up!””

She recoiled.

Then, to everyone's surprise, she began speaking.

“I didn't know he was going to hurt anyone. He told me it was an accident!””

Preston stared at her.

“Cassidy, don't you dare.””

She looked toward the officers.

“I have messages. Emails. Everything.””

Preston lunged toward her.

Two officers immediately restrained him.

As they escorted him away, he turned toward me.

“Vivian!””

I looked at him.

“Don't let them do this!””

I remained silent.

May you like

He shouted my name again.
