Chapter 2: The Letter That Changed Everything

I didn't read the letter immediately.

I stood in the middle of the ballroom, holding it between my fingers while three hundred guests pretended not to stare.

My mother looked like she might faint.

Vanessa kept glancing toward the main entrance.

And Nia stood beside Noah, rubbing his back as though she were afraid someone might suddenly pull him away.

I finally turned toward the guests.

"Everyone, I'm sorry. The celebration is over for tonight.""

A few people protested.

My business partner, Daniel Brooks, approached from the bar.

"Marcus, are you okay?""

"No. But I will be.""

I handed him the microphone.

"Please arrange transportation for anyone who needs it. The event staff will be paid for the full evening.""

Daniel looked at Nia, then at Vanessa.

"Understood.""

I turned to my mother.

"Library. Now.""

Diane lifted her chin.

"Marcus, you're making a terrible mistake.""

"Then you should have no problem explaining everything.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I'm coming with you.""

"No.""

Her eyebrows rose.

"Excuse me?""

"This conversation doesn't involve you.""

She gave a short, nervous laugh.

"Of course it involves me. We're getting married.""

I looked at her left hand.

The diamond engagement ring glittered beneath the chandelier.

"Not tonight, we're not.""

Her expression changed.

I took Noah's small hand.

"Come on, buddy.""

He looked at Nia.

"Is Mommy coming?""

I hesitated.

Nia looked at me.

"Please let him stay with me.""

I wanted to refuse.

I wanted to demand answers before allowing anything else to happen.

But Noah was already reaching for her.

And I couldn't bring myself to pull him away.

"All right," I said quietly.

We walked toward the library.

Diane followed.

Vanessa followed Diane.

Claire followed Vanessa.

Daniel remained behind to handle the guests.

As we entered the library, I noticed Nia looking at the photographs along the walls.

One of them showed me holding Noah on his first birthday.

Another showed Vanessa beside us at a Christmas party.

Nia stopped in front of that photograph.

Her face tightened.

"What's wrong?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

But I knew that expression.

It was the same one she used to wear whenever she was trying not to cry.

I closed the library doors.

"Sit down.""

My mother remained standing.

"Marcus, I don't appreciate being spoken to like a criminal.""

"Then stop behaving like someone with something to hide.""

Diane's mouth tightened.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You're letting a woman who abandoned your child manipulate you.""

I placed the envelope on the desk.

"Then let's hear what she has to say.""

Nia sat on the edge of the leather sofa.

Noah climbed beside her and rested his head against her arm.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

I'd seen it on birthday cards, grocery lists, and the little notes she used to leave in my lunch bag.

I began reading.

Marcus,

If you're holding this letter, then Noah has turned four, and I have finally been allowed to see him again.

I stopped.

Allowed?

I continued.

I need you to understand something before you judge me. I never abandoned our son. I never signed away my rights willingly. I never stopped trying to find him.

My throat tightened.

On November 17, I came to your mother's house because she told me you were in trouble. She said your company was facing a financial investigation and that the situation could destroy everything you had worked for.

I glanced at Diane.

She stared at the carpet.

She told me that if I loved you, I would stay away until the investigation was resolved. She said she had spoken to your lawyers and that you would be arrested if I contacted you.

I stopped again.

"Mom?""

Diane folded her arms.

"That's ridiculous.""

I continued reading.

I was six months pregnant. I was frightened. I didn't know who to trust. Your mother showed me documents with your signature and told me you had agreed that I should leave the state until things settled down.

My chest tightened.

She also told me that you had said you didn't want a child with me.

I looked up.

"That's a lie.""

Nia's eyes filled with tears.

"I know that now.""

"What do you mean, now?""

She looked down at Noah.

"Keep reading, Marcus.""

I continued.

Two days later, I received a call telling me that you had been involved in a car accident. Your mother said you were unconscious and that the hospital had restricted visitors.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I had never been in a car accident.

Not that year.

Not even close.

When I arrived at the hospital, your mother met me outside. She told me you had regained consciousness but had specifically asked not to see me.

I stared at Diane.

"Did you tell her that?""

My mother sighed.

"Marcus, you don't understand the circumstances.""

"Answer the question.""

She said nothing.

I looked back at the letter.

Then she told me something I will never forget.

She said if I tried to contact you again, she would make sure I never saw my baby.

My eyes moved to the next paragraph.

I believed she could do it. She had money, influence, lawyers, and people who listened when she spoke. I had nothing but the child growing inside me.

When Noah was born, I tried to contact you.

I sent letters.

I called.

I went to your office.

Every time, I was told the same thing.

You didn't want to see me.

You had moved on.

You were ashamed of me.

I lowered the paper.

Nia was crying silently.

"Why didn't you come to me directly?"" I asked.

She looked at me.

"I did.""

"When?""

"Six days after Noah was born.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Marcus, I stood outside your office building for three hours. Your security guard told me you had instructed everyone not to let me in.""

"I never gave that instruction.""

"I know.""

"How?""

She reached into her apron again.

This time she produced a small photograph.

It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Your son is beautiful. Please come meet him. I will wait as long as it takes.

My knees felt weak.

I remembered that photograph.

Not the exact picture, but the moment.

A small package had arrived at my office shortly after Noah was born.

My assistant had said it was from an unknown sender.

When I opened it, there had been a letter claiming Nia wanted nothing to do with me or the baby.

I had kept it in my desk for months.

Then, after my mother advised me to move forward, I had thrown it away.

"Who gave you this?"" I asked.

"My mother.""

"Your mother?""

Nia nodded.

"She kept copies of everything.""

I looked at the letter again.

"Where is she?""

Nia hesitated.

"She died last year.""

"I'm sorry.""

"She spent her last months trying to help me get Noah back.""

My heart twisted.

"How?""

Nia looked toward Diane.

"She found someone who knew what happened to the original custody documents.""

Diane suddenly stood.

"This is enough.""

I turned.

"Sit down.""

"Marcus, you cannot believe everything written on a piece of paper.""

"Then tell me the truth.""

My mother looked at me with a mixture of anger and desperation.

"I was protecting you.""

"From what?""

"From making a mistake.""

I stared at her.

"What mistake?""

She pointed toward Nia.

"Her.""

Nia lowered her eyes.

My mother's voice grew sharper.

"You were building a company. You were twenty-nine years old, and you were about to marry a woman who had no understanding of the world you were entering.""

"She was pregnant with my child.""

"And you were about to throw your future away!""

The room went silent.

I looked at Diane.

"You didn't want me to have a family with her.""

"I wanted you to have a future.""

"Those are not the same thing.""

Diane's jaw tightened.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus, your mother did what she thought was best. You should be grateful someone was thinking clearly.""

I turned toward her.

"Why are you defending her?""

Vanessa blinked.

"Because she's your mother.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

She glanced at Nia.

Then she said something I would never forget.

"Because I know what really happened.""

Nobody moved.

I slowly put the letter down.

"What?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"I mean, I know your mother was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She looked at Claire.

Her mother immediately shook her head.

"Vanessa, don't.""

That was the moment I realized this wasn't a secret between Diane and Nia.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

I stepped toward Vanessa.

"How long have you known about Nia?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Marcus...""

"How long?""

She looked at the floor.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Since before I agreed to marry you.""
