Chapter 7: The Truth My Mother Took To Her Grave

I didn’t speak for several seconds.

The words sat between us.

Derek wasn’t trying to control me.

He was trying to get close to my family.

Every memory I had suddenly looked different.

Our first meeting.

Our first date.

The way Derek had asked about my father.

The way he always wanted to know about my family history.

I had thought he was interested.

I thought he cared.

Now I wondered if he had been studying me from the beginning.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“She knew people were watching.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Richard, we need everything.””

My father looked at the photograph again.

“The man beside your mother was Thomas Hale.””

Derek’s father.

I knew the name.

Everyone did.

Thomas Hale had been a successful businessman before disappearing from public life.

Officially, he died years ago.

But my father’s expression told me that wasn’t the whole story.

“What did he do?””

Dad walked to an old cabinet.

He removed another folder.

“Thomas built his empire by destroying people.””

Inside were newspaper articles.

Court cases.

Names.

Families.

“He used intimidation,” Dad said.

“Blackmail. Fraud.””

Rachel scanned the documents.

“And your wife found evidence?””

Dad nodded.

“Your mother worked as an accountant for one of his companies.””

I froze.

“My mom?””

“She discovered money was being moved through fake accounts.””

My stomach turned.

The same thing Derek had done.

The same pattern.

“Derek learned from him.””

Dad looked at me.

“Worse.””

The word made me nervous.

“He inherited it.””

That night, we stayed at my father’s house.

Nobody slept.

Every sound made me look toward the windows.

The person who broke into the garage wasn’t just searching for money.

They were searching for the truth.

At 3:14 a.m., my phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

A message.

*You should have left the past buried.*

I showed Dad.

His face hardened.

Then another message appeared.

*Your mother made the same mistake.*

I felt my hands shake.

Rachel immediately called the police.

But Dad didn’t look surprised.

He looked tired.

Like he had been waiting years for this moment.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me everything.””

He was silent.

Then he sat down.

“Your mother found proof that Thomas Hale was laundering money through several companies.””

“And?””

“She was going to testify.””

My breath caught.

“But she died.””

Dad nodded.

“Three days before she was supposed to meet investigators.””

The room became silent.

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

“I wanted to believe it was an accident.””

“But?””

“But your mother left me a warning.””

He looked at the metal box.

“She knew something could happen.””

I stared at the photograph.

My entire life had been built on a lie.

Not just my marriage.

My childhood.

My family.

Everything.

Then Rachel noticed something.

“Wait.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“Richard, where was this taken?””

Dad looked.

“Outside Thomas Hale’s old office.””

Rachel zoomed in.

“There’s someone else.””

We all leaned closer.

In the background stood a young man.

Almost hidden.

But visible.

Derek.

I felt sick.

The photograph was old.

Years before I met him.

Years before our wedding.

“He knew my mother.””

Dad nodded.

“Yes.””

“But how?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door opened.

We all froze.

A man stepped inside.

Not Derek.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

My father immediately stood.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Richard Bennett.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“You should be dead.””

The man looked at me.

“And you must be Emily.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

On Derek’s phone recordings.

May you like

The man smiled.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you.””
