Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
Richard’s words changed the entire atmosphere of the garden.
Not another accusation.
Not another document.
Not another secret.
A name.
A person.
Someone who was supposed to be gone.
Daniel looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Richard stared at the phone in Daniel’s hand.
“That number…”
He swallowed.
“That number belonged to someone who disappeared four years ago.””
Nobody moved.
The guests who had been leaving slowly stopped.
Even the staff at the edges of the garden looked over.
Because there was something different about Richard’s voice.
He wasn’t exposing Vanessa anymore.
He was afraid.
“Who?”” I asked.
Richard looked at me.
“Evelyn Cross.””
The name meant nothing to most people there.
But Vanessa reacted instantly.
Her face lost all color.
Daniel noticed.
“You know that name.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Daniel stared at her.
“You always do that.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“You answer before you think.””
Her expression changed.
And I realized something important.
For the first time, Daniel wasn’t defending her.
He was studying her.
Richard stepped forward.
“Evelyn was my business partner.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Your business partner?””
“Yes.””
“What does she have to do with Vanessa?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“That’s the question I’ve been asking myself for years.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Richard, stop.””
He ignored her.
“Evelyn and I worked together in financial consulting. We handled private accounts, investments, and asset protection.””
He looked at the documents in my hand.
“When I found out money was being moved through my company, I thought it was Vanessa alone.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“But?””
Richard took a breath.
“But I found Evelyn’s name hidden in the paperwork.””
The garden went quiet.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Why is her name connected to this?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Daniel, I can explain.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was different now.
Stronger.
“Not this time.””
That sentence seemed to surprise her.
Because Vanessa was used to him giving her chances.
She was used to him protecting her.
But something had finally broken.
Richard continued.
“Evelyn disappeared after an investigation started into our company.””
“What investigation?”” I asked.
“Fraud.””
The word hung in the air.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
“No.””
Again.
That word.
But this time nobody believed it.
Richard looked at her.
“You knew enough.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Richard laughed quietly.
A tired, bitter sound.
“You always say that when someone gets close to the truth.””
I watched Daniel carefully.
Because this was the moment every person eventually reaches.
The moment when they must choose between the person they love and the truth they see.
And that choice is never easy.
“Richard,” I said, “what does Evelyn have to do with my company?””
He looked at me.
“She was interested in Whitmore Holdings before Vanessa ever met Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“She knew your company had value.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew about his company before we met?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was answer enough.
Daniel stepped back.
“How?””
She remained silent.
“How did you know?””
Finally, she spoke.
“I saw your father’s name.””
The honesty was shocking.
“I knew who he was.””
Daniel stared.
“And you still married me?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“At first, yes.””
The words hit him.
At first.
Two words.
Two words that destroyed everything.
Daniel looked like someone had physically struck him.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Because I remembered the woman standing beside him.
My wife.
Covered in mud.
Humiliated.
And I remembered his laugh.
Pain has a long memory.
“So what was the plan?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“There was no plan.””
Richard interrupted.
“Yes, there was.””
He pulled another document from his folder.
“This.””
Daniel took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Richard answered:
“A private agreement.””
Daniel looked closer.
“Between Vanessa and Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at me.
His voice was barely audible.
“It says they would receive compensation after gaining control of Whitmore Holdings.””
The guests gasped.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen—”
He held up his hand.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I’m listening.””
The way he said it was terrifying.
Because there was no emotion.
Only exhaustion.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
She moved closer.
“You think I wanted to hurt your family?””
Daniel laughed once.
A broken laugh.
“You pushed my mother into the mud.””
Her face changed.
“You think I wanted that to happen?””
“I think you didn’t care.””
Silence.
Because that was the truth.
People can forgive mistakes.
But they struggle to forgive a lack of care.
Richard looked at me.
“There’s one thing you should know, Thomas.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Evelyn didn’t disappear because she ran.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then why?””
Richard hesitated.
“She disappeared because someone paid her to leave.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“No.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re saying Vanessa…”
“I’m saying Vanessa had access to information she shouldn’t have had.””
The garden became unbearable.
Too many secrets.
Too many years of lies.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know Evelyn?””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I saw something different.
Not arrogance.
Not anger.
Regret.
Then it disappeared.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Look at me and say that again.””
She didn’t.
That was all I needed.
Daniel noticed too.
His voice broke.
“You knew her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
The admission was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long did you know her?””
“Before I met you.””
He looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“And you never told me?””
“I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I wouldn’t have understood because you were lying.””
She looked angry again.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Because the truth was harder than the lie.
I stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“What happened to Evelyn?””
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“I don’t know.””
Richard shook his head.
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
“You were the last person she contacted.””
Vanessa froze.
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Richard pulled out his phone.
“I found the message records.””
He held the screen up.
“The night Evelyn disappeared, she sent one message.””
“To who?””
Richard looked directly at Vanessa.
“To your wife.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What did the message say?””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“She said…”
He paused.
“She said, ‘I know what you and Daniel’s father are planning. If anything happens to me, he needs to know.’”
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Daniel looked confused.
“Planning?””
Richard nodded.
“That was the message.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told Evelyn something about me?””
“No.””
But this time her denial sounded different.
Not confident.
Desperate.
Richard stepped closer.
“And that’s why I came here today.””
I frowned.
“Why today?””
He looked toward the wedding decorations.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t just trying to take your company.””
He glanced at Daniel.
“She was trying to repeat what she did four years ago.””
Daniel went still.
“What happened four years ago?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“The person who knows the full truth…”
He paused.
“Is alive.””
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came from behind the crowd.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Clear.
“I was wondering how long it would take before someone finally said my name.””
Every person turned.
Near the entrance of Briarwood Estate stood a woman wearing a dark coat.
Older than I expected.
Tired.
But very much alive.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
The woman looked at her.
“Yes.””
Daniel stared.
“Who are you?””
The woman walked closer.
Her eyes never left Vanessa.
“My name is Evelyn Cross.””
She stopped beside the garden path.
Then she looked at me.
“Thomas Whitmore.””
My heart froze.
Because she knew my name.
And then she said the words that made me realize the wedding disaster had only been the beginning.
“Your son didn’t betray you first.””
She looked at Daniel.
“He was used.””
May you like
Then she looked back at me.
“The first person Vanessa tried to destroy was you.””
