Chapter 7: The Son Who Chose Her

For three days, I waited for Harrison to tell me the truth.

Not because I trusted him.

I didn’t.

But because some part of me was still his mother.

And mothers do something dangerous.

They hope.

Even when they shouldn’t.

He came to my house on Friday evening.

No expensive clothes.

No confident attitude.

Just my son standing on my porch looking smaller than I remembered.

I opened the door.

He looked at me.

“Can I come in?””

I stepped aside.

But I didn’t hug him.

I didn’t tell him everything would be okay.

Because it wasn’t.

We sat at the kitchen table.

The same table where he once built toy cars.

The same table where he now had to explain why he betrayed me.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

He stared down.

“I met Sloan six years ago.””

I said nothing.

“She wasn’t like other people.””

I almost laughed.

“You mean she was charming?””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“She made me feel important.””

I looked at him.

“You already were important.””

“I know that now.””

“Do you?””

He looked away.

The silence hurt.

“She asked about Dad.””

“What kind of questions?””

“About his business. His investments. His past.””

“And you answered?””

“At first, I didn’t think anything of it.””

I folded my arms.

“Harrison.””

He closed his eyes.

“I told her things.””

“What things?””

“About the company. About old documents. About your house.””

My heart sank.

“You gave a stranger information about your family.””

“I loved her.””

The sentence came quietly.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“You loved her.””

“Yes.””

“And what did you love more?””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Her?””

I pointed around the room.

“Or what she could get from us?””

His eyes filled.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I leaned back.

“Why the account?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t take all of it.””

“But you allowed it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because she said we needed money to start over.””

“Start over?””

“She promised we would leave everything behind.””

I stared at him.

“After taking everything from me?””

He whispered:

“I didn’t know how far she would go.””

“But you knew enough to hide it.””

That hit him.

His face collapsed.

“I was ashamed.””

I nodded slowly.

“At least that is honest.””

He looked at me.

“Mom, I’m sorry.””

The words I had waited weeks to hear.

But they didn’t heal anything.

Because apologies don’t erase choices.

“What did Sloan want from Daniel?””

He hesitated.

Then reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“I found this in her car.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

“I followed her.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a copy of an old letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

My husband’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

The letter was addressed to Victor Hale.

Victor,

You know what you did. You know why I protected Evelyn from the truth.

The account is not yours.

The shares are not yours.

And the evidence remains where nobody can reach it.

I stopped reading.

“Evidence.””

Harrison nodded.

“She believes Dad kept proof that Victor stole money.””

“Why would that matter now?””

“Because Victor died.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“Two years ago.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“And Sloan?””

“She inherited his debts.””

Everything clicked.

The expensive lifestyle.

The desperation.

The obsession.

“She needs the evidence.””

Harrison nodded.

“She thinks it can clear her father’s name.””

I looked at him.

“And you helped her.””

His eyes closed.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

That night, Harrison stayed.

Not because I forgave him.

Because Claire told us we needed to protect the documents.

Sloan had resources.

Connections.

And desperation.

At midnight, my security alarm beeped.

Everyone froze.

Claire, who had stayed late, stood up.

“What was that?””

I checked my phone.

Motion detected.

Backyard.

Harrison grabbed the flashlight.

“Don’t go out there.””

But then we heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A drawer opening.

Someone was already inside.

My house.

My safe place.

No longer safe.

We rushed upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

The attic stairs were pulled down.

And standing beneath them was Sloan.

Holding Daniel’s folder.

She looked at us.

Not surprised.

Not scared.

Just annoyed.

“You people make everything so difficult.””

Harrison stepped forward.

“Sloan.””

She looked at him.

“You brought your mother into this?””

His face hardened.

“No.””

She smiled.

“You always were weak.””

The words cut him.

Then she looked at me.

“Give me the original.””

I stared at her.

“You broke into my house.””

“Yes.””

“And you expect me to help you?””

She smiled.

“Evelyn.””

Her fingers tightened around the folder.

“You still don’t understand.””

She opened the folder.

Removed one document.

And held it up.

“This isn’t about my father.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

May you like

She looked directly at me.

“This is about yours.””
