Chapter 10: The Vows I Never Spoke

I arrived at the police station with Susan and Daniel just after noon.

Detective Harris led us into a conference room where a woman in her late fifties sat with her hands folded on the table.

Helen Ward looked exhausted. Her gray hair was pulled into a loose bun, and a paper cup of coffee sat untouched beside her.

She stood when we entered.

“Mr. Mercer,” she said.

“I'm sorry.””

I didn't sit down.

“Who started this?””

Helen looked at Detective Harris.

The detective nodded.

Helen took a breath.

“The organization began as a legitimate service. We helped families find counseling, financial support, and residential care when it was genuinely necessary. Margaret joined several years later. She was very good at persuading people that complicated situations required complicated solutions.””

“That's not an answer.””

“No,” Helen admitted.

“It isn't.””

She opened a folder and removed a series of printed emails.

“The financial scheme began with a small group of people who had access to trust records. They identified families whose children had substantial assets but whose parents were ill, deceased, or otherwise vulnerable. They then offered services that allowed them to influence guardianship decisions.””

I looked at Susan.

She was reading the documents carefully.

Helen continued.

“Margaret was responsible for recruitment. She found people who could persuade parents to sign agreements or who could arrange placements. In some cases, the families genuinely needed help. In others, the process was manipulated.””

“And Rebecca?””

“She was recruited because she was about to marry you. Margaret believed she could convince you to authorize a guardianship change after the wedding.””

I felt sick.

“Why would she think that?””

“Because she had been told you were considering it.””

“By whom?””

Helen lowered her eyes.

“Your brother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“Excuse me?””

Helen looked directly at him.

“Daniel Mercer contacted Margaret's organization two years ago.””

I turned toward my brother.

“Daniel?””

He looked as stunned as I felt.

“I never contacted them about Emily.””

Helen pulled out another document.

“This is a record of a consultation request. The name is Daniel Mercer, and the contact number matches the number listed on your business profile.””

Daniel took the paper.

He read it once, then again.

“That number belonged to my old office. Anyone could
