Chapter 8: The DNA Test That Changed Everything
By the time we reached the courthouse, Richard was already waiting outside the hearing room.
He stood beside Vanessa.
She wore a black dress and held our son against her chest.
Andrew stood a few feet behind them.
His face was pale.
When he saw Olivia, he looked away.
Richard smiled as I approached.
“Daniel. Glad you could make it.””
I ignored him.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Give me the baby.””
She tightened her arms.
“Not here.””
“Then stop using him as a shield.””
Richard stepped between us.
“Careful. You're already under investigation for threatening your wife.””
I turned toward him.
“You forged my signature. You stole my daughter. You falsified hospital records.””
Richard adjusted his cuff.
“Those are serious accusations.””
“So is fraud.””
“Prove it.””
Evelyn arrived beside me.
“We intend to.””
The hearing began at eleven.
The courtroom was small, with wooden benches and a raised desk for the judge.
Richard's attorney presented the first document.
A DNA report.
According to the results, the newborn was biologically related to me as his son.
The report included my name, Vanessa's name, and the baby's hospital identification number.
The judge examined it.
“Mr. Hayes, do you dispute these findings?””
“Yes.””
Richard's attorney stood.
“On what grounds?””
“Because I never provided a sample.””
The attorney smiled.
“The sample was collected under your authorization.””
“Which I never gave.””
Evelyn stood.
“Your Honor, we request that the report be excluded pending independent verification.””
Richard's lawyer objected.
The judge looked at the document.
“Do you have evidence of tampering?””
Evelyn placed the forged consent form on the table.
“We have evidence that the authorization was falsified.””
Richard leaned toward his attorney.
They whispered.
Then he stood.
“Your Honor, this is a desperate attempt to avoid responsibility. My brother has been under tremendous emotional stress. He has accused his wife of adultery, questioned the legitimacy of his own child, and dragged his teenage daughter into a public family dispute.””
I felt Maya's hand tighten around mine.
Richard continued.
“He is not acting in the best interests of the child.””
Evelyn stood again.
“My client has not been given access to his newborn son for more than twenty-four hours. His wife left the hospital with the child without notifying him. We believe the child's safety is being used as leverage.””
Richard shook his head.
“That's absurd.””
Then the judge looked toward Vanessa.
“Mrs. Hayes, do you wish to make a statement?””
Vanessa stood.
Her hands trembled.
“Your Honor, I love my husband. I never wanted this to happen.””
I stared at her.
She continued.
“Daniel has been under enormous pressure since his father's death. He became suspicious of everyone. I tried to protect the baby from the arguments.””
“Then why did you leave the hospital with Richard?”” I asked.
The judge raised a hand.
“Mr. Hayes, please.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I was frightened.””
“Of me?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Of what Richard would do.””
That was the first honest sentence she had spoken in days.
Andrew suddenly stood.
“Your Honor, I need to say something.””
Richard turned sharply.
“Sit down.””
Andrew didn't move.
“I'm not sitting down.””
His father stepped toward him.
“Andrew, don't.””
But Andrew had already taken a folder from his briefcase.
“I have the original DNA records.””
Richard's face changed.
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“May we approach, Your Honor?””
The judge nodded.
Andrew handed her the folder.
“There's a second test,” he said.
“The one my father didn't want anyone to see.””
Richard's attorney stood.
“This is inadmissible.””
“Then let me explain,” Andrew replied.
He looked directly at the judge.
“The report submitted by my father uses a sample collected from an unrelated individual. The original sample was replaced before testing.””
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Richard stood.
“That's a lie!””
Andrew turned toward him.
“Then explain why you paid the laboratory twice.””
He placed two receipts on the table.
One was for the original test.
The other was for a revised report.
The judge examined them.
“Mr. Hayes, do you have an explanation?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
Then at Andrew.
Finally, he looked at me.
“My brother has manipulated everyone in this family.””
Andrew shook his head.
“No, Dad. You did.””
He placed a third document on the table.
It was a DNA comparison between Andrew and the newborn.
The results showed a direct parent-child relationship.
The courtroom went silent.
Vanessa began crying.
I felt something cold spread through my chest.
The report confirmed what Olivia had shown me.
Andrew was the baby's biological father.
My nephew was my son's father.
The judge lowered the document.
“Mrs. Hayes, is this accurate?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Andrew looked at her.
“Tell them.””
She covered her face.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She began sobbing.
“Because I was in love with him.””
I looked at Andrew.
He couldn't meet my eyes.
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
“Enough!””
The judge ordered him to sit.
But Richard continued.
“You have no idea what this family would have lost if I hadn't taken control!””
Evelyn stood.
“Your Honor, we request that the court immediately freeze all trust-related transfers and order an independent investigation into the forged documents.””
The judge agreed to a temporary freeze.
Richard's face turned red.
“You can't do that!””
The judge struck the desk.
“Mr. Hayes, one more outburst and I will have you removed.””
Richard sat down.
For the first time in years, someone had told him no.
The hearing continued for another hour.
Temporary guardianship was denied.
The baby was placed under neutral protective supervision pending further investigation.
I would have visitation rights immediately.
It wasn't everything I wanted.
But it was a beginning.
Outside the courtroom, Vanessa approached me.
“Daniel, please.””
I stopped.
She held out a small envelope.
“What is this?””
“The truth.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Richard and Vanessa standing in a hospital room.
They were holding a newborn baby.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*Our son. Our future.*
I looked up.
“You knew he was Andrew's child from the beginning?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Richard told me it didn't matter. He said the baby would be registered as yours.””
“And the inheritance?””
“He promised me a share.””
“How much?””
“Five million.””
I stared at her.
She continued.
“But I didn't do it for the money.””
“Then why?””
She looked at Andrew.
“Because Richard promised he would protect us.””
Andrew shook his head.
“You knew what we were doing.””
Vanessa cried harder.
“You said we could start over.””
“I said I would take responsibility for my son. I never said I wanted to destroy Daniel's family.””
I looked at Andrew.
“Did you know about Olivia?””
He nodded.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
“Did you know she was my daughter?””
“Yes.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Andrew looked down.
“Because my father said he would disown me.””
I almost laughed.
“You let him steal my daughter to protect your inheritance?””
“I was twenty-two.””
“And now?””
He looked at the floor.
“Now I know what he is.””
Before I could respond, Evelyn approached.
“Daniel, we have a problem.””
“What now?””
She showed me a message from the hospital.
The newborn had been moved from protective supervision.
Someone had obtained an emergency medical transfer order.
The destination was a private clinic.
And the authorization carried Richard's signature.
I looked at the courthouse doors.
My brother was gone.
Again.
May you like
But this time, he hadn't left alone.
He had taken the baby.
