Chapter 7: The Man Who Wasn't My Father
Dad didn't speak for almost a full minute.
He sat on the edge of the sofa, holding the birth certificate between his fingers.
Mom stood near the fireplace.
Evelyn remained beside the coffee table.
Jordan looked as if he wanted to punch a hole through the wall.
I was the only person who seemed unable to move.
Finally, Dad raised his head.
“Denise, tell me the truth.””
Mom wiped her cheeks.
“I never intended to hurt anyone.””
“Did you know Daniel Whitmore was Maya's biological father?””
She nodded.
Dad closed his eyes.
“And you let me believe she was mine?””
“I loved her.””
“That wasn't my question.””
Mom looked at me.
“Marcus, when Maya was born, I was terrified. Robert told me Evelyn was struggling and that Daniel had died. He said the baby needed a family.””
Dad stood.
“You told me the adoption was a simple arrangement.””
“It was.””
“Then why is there another man's name on the birth certificate?””
Mom didn't answer.
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“Because Daniel signed an acknowledgment of paternity before he died.””
I turned toward her.
“Did you know him?””
She nodded.
“He was my boyfriend.””
“Were you in love with him?””
Her eyes softened.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't he raise me?””
“He died in a car accident when I was six months pregnant.””
I swallowed.
“Did he know about me?””
“He knew I was pregnant. He wanted to marry me. He had already started making plans for us.””
She paused.
“Your grandfather didn't approve of him.””
Dad frowned.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Daniel worked in construction. He didn't come from money. Your grandfather thought I was throwing my life away.””
Jordan shook his head.
“So Grandpa took Maya away because he didn't like the father?””
“Not exactly,” Evelyn replied.
She opened the folder and removed a letter.
“Your grandfather believed Daniel had been involved in something dangerous before his death.””
Dad stared at her.
“What kind of dangerous?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“He had discovered financial irregularities inside Robert's company.””
The room went quiet.
Jordan immediately looked at the documents.
“Financial irregularities?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Daniel worked as an accountant for the company. Before he died, he told me he had found evidence that someone was moving money through fake vendors.””
Dad shook his head.
“My father would never—”
“Your father was running the company,” Evelyn interrupted.
“He wasn't the only person working there.””
Dad looked at her.
“Who else?””
Evelyn took a folded photograph from the envelope.
It showed three men standing outside a construction site.
Grandpa was in the middle.
Daniel stood on the left.
The third man was younger, with a thick mustache and a familiar smile.
Jordan leaned closer.
“That's Uncle Raymond.””
Dad's face changed.
Raymond Carter was Grandpa's younger brother.
He had left the family business years earlier after a disagreement with my father.
I remembered him from childhood.
He used to bring expensive presents at Christmas, then disappear for months.
Dad looked at the photograph.
“Raymond hasn't worked with us in fifteen years.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“He never stopped working with Robert.””
Dad looked up.
“What?””
“Daniel discovered that Raymond was using shell companies to move money. He told Robert. Instead of reporting it, Robert tried to handle it privately.””
Jordan's voice became low.
“And then Daniel died.””
Evelyn nodded.
I felt sick.
“Are you saying someone killed him?””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“I'm saying the circumstances surrounding his death were never properly investigated.””
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“I tried.””
“And?””
“Robert convinced me that if I spoke publicly, he would make sure I lost Maya.””
I looked at her.
“He threatened you?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He said he had enough money and influence to make sure I never saw you again.””
My chest tightened.
I had spent my entire childhood believing I was lucky.
I had a beautiful bedroom.
A loving family.
A father who worked hard.
A mother who packed my lunch.
And somewhere outside that life, a woman had been sending letters I never received.
“Why now?”” I asked.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Raymond contacted me.””
Jordan's head snapped up.
“When?””
“Three months ago.””
Dad looked alarmed.
“What did he want?””
“He said he knew what happened to the trust. He said the company was being used to move money again.””
Jordan pulled out his phone.
“That's when the new company was registered.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I believe so.””
Dad looked at Mom.
“Did you speak to Raymond?””
She shook her head.
But Jordan interrupted.
“That's not true.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He opened his phone and showed Dad a screenshot.
A message had been sent from Mom's number to a contact saved as Raymond C.
*The girl has accessed the account. We need to move the remaining funds before Jordan discovers the second ledger.*
Dad stared at the screen.
Then he looked at Mom.
“Did you send this?””
Mom's mouth opened.
No sound came out.
I stepped toward her.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain!””
She began shaking.
“Raymond told me the money was being used to protect the company. He said your grandfather had approved everything.””
Jordan laughed angrily.
“Grandpa has been dead for six years!””
“I know!””
“Then why would you believe him?””
“Because he showed me documents!””
Dad took the phone from Jordan.
“Where is Raymond now?””
Mom whispered, “I don't know.””
Evelyn suddenly stood.
“He's coming here.””
Dad frowned.
“What?””
“He called me this morning. He said he wanted to meet Marcus.””
Dad's face hardened.
“When?””
Evelyn looked toward the front window.
“Today.””
A car door slammed outside.
Jordan walked toward the window.
He pulled the curtain aside.
Then he stepped back.
“Dad.””
“What?””
“There's someone in the driveway.””
Dad moved beside him.
A black SUV was parked behind Evelyn's car.
A man stepped out.
He wore a dark coat and carried a leather briefcase.
Even after all these years, I recognized him immediately.
Uncle Raymond.
He walked toward the front door as if he owned the house.
Then he knocked.
Dad didn't move.
Raymond knocked again.
“Marcus! Open the door.””
Dad's voice was cold.
“Don't let him in.””
But Raymond spoke through the wood.
“I know Evelyn is there.””
He paused.
“And I know Maya has seen the birth certificate.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She was trembling.
Raymond continued.
“Marcus, you need to hear what your father did before you make another mistake.””
Dad stepped toward the door.
“What did my father do?””
Raymond's answer came immediately.
“He didn't just steal from the trust.””
May you like
A pause.
“He stole the money Daniel Whitmore was killed for finding.””
