Chapter 7: Grandma’s Final Warning
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My grandmother had known.
Somehow, she had known.
My hands trembled as I turned the page.
The ballroom disappeared around me.
The music.
The guests.
The whispers.
Everything faded.
All I saw were the words written in my grandmother’s handwriting.
*My sweet Evelyn,*
*If you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.*
My throat tightened.
*Preston has always believed love is something you earn through success, money, and power. He struggled to understand that family is not a competition.*
I looked up.
Preston was staring at me.
For once, he looked small.
Not like the successful businessman everyone admired.
Just a man caught in a lie.
I continued.
*When I discovered what Preston planned to do, I made changes to my will.*
My heart raced.
Changes?
What changes?
I read faster.
*I did not leave the inheritance to Sophie because I doubted you. I left it to Sophie because I trusted you.*
A tear slipped down my cheek.
My grandmother had understood.
She had seen what nobody else did.
She knew I had spent my entire life fighting for my daughter.
The note continued.
*Preston came to me months before my passing. He asked questions about the trust. He asked what would happen if Evelyn was unable to provide for Sophie.*
My eyes lifted.
I stared at Preston.
“You went to Grandma?””
He looked away.
“You were sick.””
“You were planning this before she died?””
His silence answered.
Lauren covered her mouth.
“I can’t believe you.””
Preston finally snapped.
“I was trying to protect the family!””
“No,” I said.
My voice was calm now.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
He shook his head.
“You always thought I had everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
His anger suddenly broke through.
“You had no idea what it was like.””
The room watched.
“You were always the one Grandma comforted. You were always the one she defended. Everyone felt sorry for Evelyn.””
He laughed bitterly.
“But me? I had to be perfect.””
I stared at him.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry.
Almost.
Then I remembered Sophie’s blood on her dress.
“You were jealous of an eight-year-old?””
His face changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You hated that Grandma loved my daughter.””
Preston looked away.
The truth hurt because it was obvious.
Officer Reynolds wrote something down.
“Mr. Carter, did you threaten to pursue custody of the child?””
Preston didn’t answer.
“Mr. Carter?””
Finally, he said:
“I spoke with an attorney.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You actually did.””
“I never filed.””
“But you planned to.””
He looked frustrated.
“Because I thought I could help her.””
Officer Reynolds looked at him.
“By accusing her of theft?””
No answer.
A silence fell.
Then Sophie tugged my sleeve.
“Mommy?””
I knelt.
“What is it?””
She looked at Preston.
“Does Uncle Preston hate me?””
The question broke something in the room.
Even Preston looked shaken.
I expected him to ignore her.
Instead, he whispered:
“No.””
But Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then why did you hurt me?””
Nobody had an answer.
Not even him.
Preston opened his mouth.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
“I was angry.””
Sophie wiped her face.
“I was scared.””
That was the moment everyone understood.
The damage wasn’t just the injury.
It wasn’t just the accusation.
He had made a little girl afraid of someone who was supposed to love her.
Lauren walked away from Preston.
“I need to talk to you.””
He looked at her.
“Lauren—”
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I married someone I thought protected people.””
She looked at Sophie.
“But tonight I watched you destroy one.””
The guests began leaving.
The wedding was over.
Not because of the phone.
Not because of the inheritance.
Because everyone had finally seen the truth.
Outside the ballroom, Officer Reynolds asked me if I wanted to press charges.
I looked back at Sophie.
At my daughter sleeping against my shoulder.
I thought about everything.
Then I said:
“I need time.””
He nodded.
“That’s your choice.””
But before I left, Madison stopped me.
“Evelyn.””
I turned.
She looked terrified.
“There’s something else.””
I frowned.
“What else?””
She looked toward Preston.
“He wasn’t acting alone.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Madison lowered her voice.
“The phone. The notes. The custody plan…”
She swallowed.
“Someone helped him.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Madison looked behind me.
Toward the person I least expected.
May you like
And when she said the name, I felt the ground disappear beneath my feet.
“Your mother.””
