Chapter 8: The Signature That Exposed Them

I didn't answer Vanessa immediately.

I looked at Daniel.

He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"Explain what you mean," I said.

Vanessa sighed.

"Your mother doesn't understand the legal situation. She's being influenced by people who want to make money from this.""

"Who?""

"Your attorney. That woman from the property office. Even my mother.""

I glanced at Daniel.

"You're blaming everyone except yourself.""

"I'm trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

"From a legal mess you don't understand.""

I leaned back.

"Then explain the document bearing my signature.""

Silence.

"Charles, I don't know what you're talking about.""

"The document submitted to the county.""

She hesitated.

"That was a preliminary proposal.""

"With my signature.""

"It was only to establish interest.""

"Did I sign it?""

"Not personally.""

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly raised his eyebrows.

I repeated the words.

"Not personally?""

Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.

"I mean, you approved the general idea.""

"No, I didn't.""

"Charles, you told me you wanted us to build wealth together.""

"That doesn't mean you can sign my name.""

She raised her voice.

"You're making this sound criminal!""

I looked at Daniel.

He wrote down the exact wording.

"Vanessa, who signed it?""

She didn't answer.

I continued.

"Was it you?""

"Goodbye, Charles.""

The call ended.

Daniel immediately documented the conversation.

"That was important.""

I looked at him.

"She basically admitted I didn't sign it.""

"She may have. We'll need to preserve the recording and establish its authenticity, but her statement could be relevant.""

My mother sat quietly across the room.

"Charles, I don't want you getting into trouble.""

I walked over and kissed her forehead.

"Mom, the people who created this situation are responsible for it. Not us.""

Later that afternoon, Patricia arrived at the farmhouse with a sealed envelope.

She looked exhausted.

"I found something.""

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were printed emails between Richard and Vanessa.

The first message was dated eleven months earlier.

Richard had written:

The Bennett property remains our highest priority. The old preservation agreement complicates the acquisition. We need someone inside the family.

Vanessa's reply was brief.

I'm working on it.

Another email appeared three months later.

Charles is serious about me. His mother trusts me. I can get access to the property records.

I felt my stomach turn.

Another message followed.

Once we're married, I'll convince him to combine the assets into a family trust. Evelyn won't be able to interfere once the structure is established.

My mother covered her mouth.

Patricia began crying.

"I didn't know she had written that.""

I looked at her.

"You said she loved me.""

Patricia wiped her cheeks.

"I wanted to believe she did.""

Daniel continued reading.

The final email was the most disturbing.

It had been sent four days before the wedding.

Richard, we need to move quickly. Charles is beginning to ask questions about the property. I want Evelyn to sign before the ceremony.

Richard replied:

If she refuses, use the authorization we discussed. We cannot lose the access corridor.

I looked at Daniel.

"What authorization?""

He turned the page.

Attached was a scanned document.

It was a power-of-attorney form.

My mother's name appeared at the top.

But the signature at the bottom was not hers.

Daniel examined it carefully.

"Mrs. Bennett, did you sign this?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize anyone to sign for you?""

"Absolutely not.""

He nodded.

"Then this needs to be preserved as potential evidence of forgery.""

Patricia looked horrified.

"My brother did this?""

Daniel answered carefully.

"The emails suggest coordination. We need the original electronic records and a proper investigation before drawing final conclusions.""

I looked at the document.

My mother's name.

Her address.

Her property information.

Everything had been assembled as if she had willingly authorized it.

I suddenly understood why Vanessa had been so desperate for the wedding to happen.

She hadn't wanted a marriage ceremony.

She had wanted a legal advantage.

And she had wanted it before anyone discovered the real value of the farm.

Daniel contacted the appropriate authorities and arranged for the documents to be reviewed.

He also contacted James Whitmore.

By evening, the situation had changed dramatically.

The preliminary filing was formally challenged, and a notice was placed in the relevant property records to alert interested parties to the dispute.

The following morning, Daniel called me.

"Charles, we have a development.""

"What?""

"Richard Mitchell has requested a meeting.""

I laughed without humor.

"Of course he has.""

"He wants to settle.""

"Settle what?""

"He's offering your mother $1.2 million for the farm.""

I looked at my mother.

She was sitting on the porch, shelling peas into a metal bowl.

"Tell him no.""

Daniel paused.

"Are you certain?""

"Completely.""

"His offer includes a confidentiality agreement.""

I felt my anger rising.

"He wants to buy her silence too?""

"That's how it reads.""

I walked outside.

My mother looked up.

"What's wrong?""

"Richard made another offer.""

She shook her head.

"I don't want his money.""

I smiled.

"Neither do I.""

But Daniel wasn't finished.

"There is another reason I called.""

"What?""

"Richard has scheduled a press conference for tomorrow afternoon.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"He's announcing a major development partnership. And according to the preliminary documents, he's presenting the Bennett property as part of the project.""

I stared at him.

"He can't do that.""

"Not without proper authorization. But he's apparently prepared to claim that the acquisition is already under negotiation.""

I felt a cold chill.

"Then we need to stop him.""

Daniel nodded.

"We need to prepare a formal response.""

That evening, Patricia called me again.

Her voice was trembling.

"Charles, I need to tell you something before tomorrow.""

"What?""

"Vanessa is planning to attend the press conference.""

"Why?""

"She's going to announce that you and she are still together.""

I stood.

"What?""

"She intends to tell everyone that the wedding was postponed because of a family disagreement, not canceled.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"She thinks she can lie her way out of this?""

Patricia whispered:

"She's also bringing a copy of your engagement agreement.""

I frowned.

"What engagement agreement?""

Patricia went silent.

Then she said:

"Charles, she claims you signed a document promising to contribute the farm to your future marriage.""

My blood ran cold.

"That doesn't exist.""

"I know.""

"Then where did she get it?""

May you like

Patricia began crying.

"She created it.""
