Chapter 5: The Father Who Was Never a Father

Emily turned slowly.

Her eyes found Robert.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The man who had raised her.

The man whose last name she carried.

The man whose voice had guided her childhood.

Stood behind her with an expression she had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

“Daniel,” Robert said quietly.

The name sounded like a warning.

Daniel Whitmore stepped farther into the room.

The years had changed him, but Emily could still see the resemblance.

The same dark eyes as her mother.

The same slight tilt of the head.

The same expression of someone who knew exactly how much pain a secret could cause.

“You always did have a way of making everything about control,” Daniel said.

Robert’s hands tightened.

“You have no right to be here.””

Daniel looked around the room.

“The room says otherwise.””

Emily watched them.

Two men who shared a history she had never known existed.

Two men who had spent her entire life deciding what she deserved to know.

She felt sick.

“Stop.””

Her voice cut through the room.

Both men looked at her.

“I don’t care about whatever happened between you.””

She held up the photograph.

“I need answers.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“You deserve them.””

Emily pointed toward Robert.

“Start with him.””

Robert looked at her.

“Emily—”

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“No more interruptions. No more protecting me from the truth.””

She looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””

Her eyes moved from Robert to Margaret.

“But somehow, I’m the only person who had no idea what was happening.””

Nobody spoke.

Emily turned back to Daniel.

“Who is my father?””

Daniel looked at Robert.

Then at Emily.

“His name was Thomas Reed.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that hurt.

Emily frowned.

“Who?””

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

Robert’s face darkened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Thomas worked with Evelyn before she met Robert. They knew each other for years.””

Emily shook her head.

“So my mother was married to Robert and…”

“She was separated from him,” Daniel corrected gently.

“She had already filed for divorce.””

Emily looked at Robert.

“You told me they were happy.””

Robert didn’t respond.

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn found out she was pregnant shortly after leaving Robert.””

Emily’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

“And Thomas was my father.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The room spun slightly.

All the small moments from her childhood rearranged themselves.

The questions she had ignored.

The things that never made sense.

Why she had never looked like Robert.

Why he always seemed uncomfortable when relatives joked about family resemblance.

Why her mother kept telling her that blood was not the only thing that made someone family.

Emily looked at Robert.

“Did you know?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than she expected.

She closed her eyes.

“You knew.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Emily, listen—”

“No.””

She opened her eyes.

“You knew.””

His voice became desperate.

“I knew Evelyn was pregnant.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Robert stopped.

The truth was finally forcing its way out.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

Emily nodded slowly.

“So all those years…”

She swallowed.

“You knew I wasn’t your daughter.””

Robert’s face changed.

“No.””

Emily frowned.

“No?””

“I knew you weren’t my biological daughter.””

He looked at her.

“But you were my daughter.””

The words should have mattered.

Maybe once they would have.

But tonight, they felt empty.

“Then why lie?””

Robert looked away.

“Because Evelyn asked me to.””

Emily froze.

Daniel immediately reacted.

“That’s not true.””

Robert looked at him.

“You weren’t there.””

“No, but I knew Evelyn.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“She would never ask you to erase her child’s identity.””

Robert’s voice hardened.

“She asked me to keep Emily safe.””

“By lying?””

“By keeping her alive.””

The room went silent.

Emily stared at him.

“What?””

Robert looked at her.

And for the first time, he seemed like a man who was not trying to defend himself.

Just survive.

“Thomas Reed wasn’t just Evelyn’s friend.””

Emily waited.

Robert continued.

“He was involved with people who wanted access to Evelyn’s family assets.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s a lie.””

Robert looked at him.

“You know it isn’t.””

Emily looked between them.

“Someone please explain.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Thomas loved your mother.””

“And Robert?””

Daniel looked at him.

“He wanted control.””

Robert’s eyes hardened.

“That’s rich coming from someone who disappeared.””

Daniel went quiet.

Emily noticed.

“You did disappear.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came slowly.

“Because I was told you were dead.””

Emily froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“I received a message fifteen years ago.””

His voice became quieter.

“It said Evelyn and Emily had both died.””

Emily’s hand moved to her mouth.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Margaret whispered:

“Robert.””

Everyone looked at her.

She seemed to regret saying his name.

But it was too late.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Your mother survived the accident.””

Emily felt her heart stop.

The room disappeared.

“What accident?””

No one answered.

She looked at Margaret.

“Tell me.””

The lawyer looked devastated.

“The night Evelyn died…”

She paused.

“She wasn’t alone.””

Emily’s breathing changed.

“What are you saying?””

Margaret looked toward Robert.

“Your mother’s car was found near the river.””

Robert looked down.

“She lost control.””

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“She never drove that road when it snowed.””

Emily stared.

“Then what happened?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Because the answer was worse.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She was trying to escape.””

Emily shook her head.

“From who?””

Daniel looked at Robert.

Again.

And this time, Robert didn’t deny it.

“She found out Robert had been moving money from the trust.””

Emily looked at him.

“Is that true?””

Robert said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She confronted him.””

“Stop.””

Robert’s voice was low.

But Daniel continued.

“She told him she would expose everything.””

Emily felt tears forming.

“And then?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Then Evelyn disappeared.””

The room was silent.

“She died,” Emily whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

“But you think…”

“I think someone wanted everyone to believe she did.””

Emily looked at Robert.

Her entire body felt cold.

“You?””

Robert looked devastated.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Almost too immediately.

Emily noticed.

“What happened that night?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“I went after her.””

Nobody moved.

“I wanted to talk.””

“Talk?””

Emily’s voice shook.

“You followed her.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Robert looked toward the window.

The snow outside reflected in his eyes.

“When I reached the road…”

He stopped.

Emily waited.

“What?””

Robert’s voice broke.

“The car was already in the river.””

The room became completely still.

“I pulled her out.””

Emily covered her mouth.

Robert continued.

“But she wasn’t alone.””

Daniel looked at him sharply.

“What?””

Robert stared at the floor.

“There was someone else.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Robert.””

The man who had always seemed impossible to break finally looked terrified.

Because whatever he had hidden…

He was still afraid of it.

“There was another car.””

Emily whispered:

“What?””

Robert looked at her.

“A second vehicle.””

The silence stretched.

“Whose car?””

Robert’s face went pale.

Then he said the one name Emily never expected.

“Thomas Reed.””

Daniel froze.

“No.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Emily looked between them.

Her mother.

Her real father.

The accident.

The lies.

Everything had been connected.

But before she could ask another question, a sound came from the hallway.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from inside the east wing.

From somewhere behind the walls.

Emily walked toward it.

“No.””

Robert grabbed her arm.

She looked down at his hand.

He released her immediately.

For once, he looked afraid to touch her.

Emily opened a hidden panel behind the bookshelf.

Inside was an old telephone.

The line was dead.

It shouldn’t have been ringing.

But it was.

Emily picked it up.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a woman’s voice whispered.

A voice Emily had not heard in fifteen years.

A voice she knew better than her own.

Her mother.

“Emily…”

The phone slipped slightly in her hand.

“Mom?””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

Then:

“Don’t trust Robert.””

Emily looked at him.

Robert went completely still.

The voice trembled.

“He wasn’t the one who found me that night.””

A crack of static.

Then the final words.

“The person who tried to kill me is still inside the house.””

The call ended.

May you like

And from somewhere downstairs…

A door slammed shut.
