Chapter 6: The Name Beneath the Money

Vanessa didn't move.

Her fingers remained wrapped around the edge of the silver frame, and her eyes traveled slowly across the document behind the glass.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Why is my name on this?””

Daniel reached for the frame.

“Give it to me.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No. Answer me.””

“Vanessa, this is not the time.””

“Then when is the time, Daniel? After we're married? After we've signed everything? After I've moved into that condominium?””

The ballroom had gone quiet.

A waiter stopped beside a table, holding a tray of champagne glasses. Two elderly women exchanged uncomfortable looks. Near the stage, the string quartet had stopped playing.

I remained seated.

Michael stood beside me, his hands folded calmly.

Daniel looked around the room.

“Everyone, I'm sorry. This is a private family matter.””

Michael nodded.

“Then perhaps you should have kept the family's financial records private when you were moving the money.””

Daniel's face reddened.

“I'm warning you.””

Michael didn't raise his voice.

“You're welcome to discuss the documents with your attorney. The copies are accurate, and the originals are preserved.””

Vanessa looked down again.

The document identified her as a beneficiary of Bennett Strategic Holdings.

Below her name was a percentage of ownership.

She turned the page.

Another record showed that the company had received funds transferred from our joint education account.

Her lips parted.

“Daniel, you told me this company was funded by your business.””

“It was.””

“Then why is there a transfer from Claire's savings account?””

He shook his head.

“That's not what it looks like.””

I had heard that sentence before.

It was Daniel's favorite escape route.

Whenever the truth became uncomfortable, he claimed the evidence was misleading.

Vanessa placed the frame on the table.

“Explain it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You planned this.””

I met his eyes.

“No. You planned this when you moved the money.””

A few guests shifted in their seats.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””

I looked at the wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The candles.

The expensive table settings.

Then I looked back at him.

“No, Daniel. I would have preferred to spend this money on our daughters.””

He clenched his jaw.

Vanessa picked up the cream-colored envelope.

“What's inside?””

I answered before Daniel could.

“A letter from my attorney explaining the financial dispute and the steps already taken to preserve the records.””

She opened it.

Her eyes moved across the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her hands began trembling.

“Daniel, you told me there was no dispute.””

He looked at her.

“Because there isn't one. Claire is trying to create one.””

Vanessa turned another page.

“Then why has an independent review been requested?””

Daniel didn't answer.

“Why does the letter say the disputed transactions have been referred for examination?””

Still nothing.

I watched her read the document.

For the first time since I had met her, Vanessa wasn't looking at me as the jealous former wife.

She was looking at the man standing beside her.

And she was beginning to see what I had spent thirteen years refusing to see.

The wedding coordinator approached cautiously.

“Mr. Bennett, would you like us to move the gifts to another room?””

Daniel snapped.

“Just give us a minute.””

The coordinator immediately stepped away.

Vanessa removed a photograph from the box.

It showed Daniel outside the jewelry store.

She turned it over.

The date was written on the back.

“That's the day you bought my engagement ring,” she whispered.

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Vanessa, please.””

“You told me that ring was paid for with your investment money.””

“It was.””

“Then why is the transaction connected to the company?””

“Because I moved funds around. It's normal business practice.””

Michael spoke quietly.

“Moving funds between accounts is not the central issue. The source and purpose of the funds are what matter.””

Daniel glared at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Michael didn't respond.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Did you know about the ring?””

“I knew about the withdrawal. I didn't know what it paid for until the records were reviewed.””

She looked down at the photograph again.

“Did you know about the condominium?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know I was listed as a beneficiary?””

“No. I learned that during the financial review.””

She pressed her lips together.

Then she turned toward Daniel.

“You told me the condominium was your reward for years of hard work.””

Daniel reached for her hand.

“Sweetheart, listen to me.””

She pulled away.

“Don't call me that until you explain why my name is connected to this money.””

He glanced toward the guests.

“Can we please talk somewhere private?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You had no problem making financial decisions in private. Now you want privacy because people can see the documents?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel did something I hadn't expected.

He laughed.

It was a short, ugly sound.

“Fine. You want the truth? Claire and I had joint accounts. I had the right to manage our money.””

I stood.

“You had the responsibility to tell me what you were doing with it.””

He turned toward me.

“You always wanted control.””

“No. I wanted honesty.””

“That's why I left.””

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I said something I had rehearsed many times but never found the courage to say.

“You didn't leave because I wanted honesty. You left because I started asking questions.””

His expression changed.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

And somewhere behind us, a guest quietly whispered, “Oh my God.””

Michael closed the box.

“We should leave now, Claire.””

I nodded.

But before I could take a step, Vanessa spoke.

“Wait.””

She was holding another document.

It was a company authorization form.

My name appeared on the signature line.

Her eyes moved between the paper and me.

“Is this your signature?””

I looked at it.

The same false authorization we had discovered in Daniel's office.

“No.””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“She signed that months ago.””

I stared at him.

“I never signed that document.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“You told me she had authorized the transfers.””

“She did.””

Michael stepped forward.

“The document is disputed. Its authenticity is being examined. Nobody should make assumptions about it.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Enough.””

He grabbed the document from Vanessa.

She let him take it.

Then she said something that made him stop.

“You told me you had already handled the divorce finances.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I did.””

“No, you didn't.””

She glanced at the guests.

Then she removed her engagement ring.

For a moment, I thought she was going to throw it.

Instead, she placed it gently beside the silver frame.

“I need to understand who I'm marrying.””

Daniel stared at the ring.

“Vanessa, don't do this.””

She stepped away.

“I need time.””

The wedding coordinator approached again, visibly distressed.

“Mr. Bennett, should we delay the ceremony?””

Daniel didn't answer.

He simply watched Vanessa walk toward the ballroom doors.

And for the first time that afternoon, he looked completely alone.

I followed Michael toward the exit.

But just before we reached the doors, my phone vibrated.

A message from Robert appeared.

Claire, we have just received additional information from the bank. Call me immediately. The review has uncovered another account, and its beneficiary is not Vanessa.

I stopped walking.

Michael turned.

“What happened?””

I showed him the message.

He read it.

May you like

Then his expression became serious.

“Claire, I think we need to know whose name is on that account.””
