Chapter 4: The Family I Never Expected

Rachel and I had always gotten along.

During my marriage, she was the only person in Daniel's family who occasionally challenged him.

She had witnessed the fertility appointments, the arguments, and the way Margaret slowly turned every disappointment into something I was supposed to apologize for.

After the divorce, Rachel called a few times.

But Daniel made it clear he didn't want his family maintaining contact with me.

So eventually, our conversations stopped.

When she called that Saturday, I was surprised.

"How did you hear about the children?"" I asked.

"Emily mentioned you when I was volunteering at a community center. I didn't know it was you until I saw your surname.""

I glanced toward the garden.

Sophie was collecting fallen leaves.

Oliver was attempting to climb the wrong side of the slide.

"Yes," I said.

"They're with me.""

"Are they foster children?""

"They are. We're working toward adoption.""

Rachel was quiet.

Then she asked, "Are you happy?""

I looked at the two children.

Oliver had finally reached the top of the slide.

Sophie was cheering him on.

"More than I thought possible.""

Rachel exhaled.

"I'm glad.""

There was another pause.

"Claire, I need to tell you something.""

"What?""

"Daniel is getting married.""

I already knew.

A mutual acquaintance had mentioned it months earlier.

"Congratulations to him.""

"He's marrying Vanessa.""

"I know.""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"She's pregnant.""

I felt a familiar sting.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

Not because I wanted his child.

But because I remembered every night I had spent blaming my body while he quietly planned a future with someone else.

"How far along?"" I asked.

"Almost seven months.""

I swallowed.

"Then I hope everything goes well.""

"Claire...""

"Rachel, I'm okay.""

She didn't sound convinced.

"He's been telling people that everything was different with Vanessa.""

I closed my eyes.

"What does that mean?""

"He says he never had any problems with her. He says the timing was right. That he finally found the woman who could give him what he wanted.""

I stared at the garden.

Oliver was waving at me.

I waved back.

"Rachel, I don't want to hear about his opinions.""

"I know. But I thought you should understand why he's been saying things.""

"Why?""

"Because he's planning a baby shower. And Vanessa wants the whole family there.""

I frowned.

"Why are you telling me this?""

"Because she asked me to invite you.""

I actually laughed.

"Why would she want me there?""

"I don't know. She said she wanted everyone to get along.""

I looked at the two children again.

"Rachel, I have a family now. I don't need to attend Daniel's celebration.""

"I understand.""

We said goodbye.

For the next few days, I didn't think much about the invitation.

Then a formal invitation arrived.

A pale pink envelope.

Gold lettering.

Daniel and Vanessa cordially invited me to celebrate the upcoming arrival of their little girl.

I placed it in a drawer.

I had no intention of going.

But a week later, Vanessa called.

I almost didn't answer.

"Claire?""

"Yes?""

"This is Vanessa.""

"I know.""

She laughed nervously.

"I hope you don't mind me calling.""

"What's this about?""

"I wanted to make sure you received the invitation.""

"I did.""

"And I really hope you'll come.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Can I ask why?""

There was a brief silence.

"Because I think it's important that we all move forward. Daniel has told me a lot about your marriage.""

I felt my fingers tighten around the phone.

"Has he?""

"Yes. He said you both went through a difficult time.""

"That's one way to describe it.""

"Claire, I don't want there to be any bitterness.""

I almost told her that bitterness wasn't what I felt.

I felt pity.

Pity for the woman who believed she had won a competition that had never existed.

Instead, I said, "I'll think about it.""

After we hung up, I stood in the kitchen for several minutes.

Sophie came in holding a drawing.

"Look!""

It showed three figures.

A tall woman.

A little girl.

A little boy.

Above them, Sophie had written three names in crooked letters.

CLAIRE.

SOPHIE.

OLIVER.

I smiled.

"That's beautiful.""

She pointed at the tall figure.

"That's you.""

"I can tell.""

"You're our family.""

I crouched beside her.

"Yes, sweetheart. We are.""

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

And I knew I wasn't going to let Daniel's opinions disturb the life we had built.

The adoption hearing took place three months later.

I wore a navy-blue dress.

Sophie wore a yellow cardigan.

Oliver insisted on wearing his favorite dinosaur shoes.

The judge reviewed the paperwork and asked the children a few questions.

"Do you like living with Claire?""

Sophie nodded.

"Yes.""

"And what do you like most about her?""

Sophie looked at me.

"She stays.""

The courtroom became very quiet.

The judge smiled gently.

"That's a wonderful answer.""

Oliver raised his hand.

The judge laughed.

"Do you have something to add?""

Oliver nodded.

"She makes pancakes.""

Everyone laughed.

Then the judge signed the final order.

Sophie and Oliver were legally my children.

I cried so hard that Rachel, who had come to support us after hearing about the hearing, had to hand me a tissue.

When we stepped outside, Oliver grabbed my hand.

"Can we go home now?""

"Yes, baby.""

"Together?""

I kissed his forehead.

"Always.""

That evening, I put two new photographs on the mantel.

One of the children holding their adoption certificates.

The other of all three of us in the courthouse garden.

For the first time, I wasn't looking at an empty future.

I was looking at a life.

Three days later, Rachel called again.

"Claire, I need to ask you something.""

"What is it?""

"Would you consider coming to the baby shower?""

I sighed.

"Rachel...""

"Please. I want you there.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel has been saying some things, and I don't think you know how bad they've gotten.""

I sat down.

"What things?""

She hesitated.

"He tells people that he wasted seven years of his life waiting for you. He says he had to start over because you couldn't give him a family.""

My jaw tightened.

"And you believe him?""

"No.""

"Then why does it matter?""

"Because Vanessa believes him. And she thinks you're some bitter ex-wife who can't accept that he's happy.""

I looked toward the living room.

Sophie and Oliver were building a tower from wooden blocks.

"I don't owe anyone an explanation.""

"I know.""

Rachel paused.

"But maybe you should stop letting him tell your story.""

I didn't answer immediately.

Then I looked at the two little faces watching me.

"All right," I said.

"I'll come.""

Rachel exhaled.

"Thank you.""

But I had one condition.

I wanted to bring the children.

Rachel was silent.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Daniel might not react well.""

I smiled faintly.

"Then perhaps he should have thought about that before inviting me into his celebration.""

What I didn't tell Rachel was that I had another reason for attending.

On Tuesday, I had sent Daniel a message.

One short message.

And I wanted him to have the opportunity to read it before Saturday.

He never replied.

May you like

But I knew he had received it.

And by the time I walked into that baby shower, I would discover exactly why he had chosen to ignore it.
