Chapter 8: Vanessa Came to the Police Station With a Wedding Ring
At 2:14 a.m., Detective Harris called to tell me that Vanessa had been located.
She was at her father's house.
She had refused to answer questions without a lawyer, but she had agreed to come to the station voluntarily.
I was sitting in a small interview room when she arrived.
I had changed out of my wedding suit into a borrowed sweatshirt. My eyes burned from exhaustion, and my hands still smelled faintly of the metal filing cabinet at the storage facility.
Vanessa entered wearing a cream coat over her wedding dress.
The veil was gone.
Her makeup had been wiped away, leaving dark shadows beneath her eyes. She carried a small black handbag and wore the engagement ring I had given her six months earlier.
She looked at me through the glass partition.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she sat down.
“Daniel,” she said softly, “I'm glad you're here.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I don't want you hearing lies about me from people who have always hated me.””
I almost laughed.
“Emily hated you?””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“Emily was jealous of me.””
“My wife trusted you with her life.””
“And I loved her.””
“You hid her letter.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You stole documents from my father's office.””
“I was protecting the company.””
“You tried to transfer Lily's inheritance into an account you controlled.””
“That is not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“I never wanted Lily's money for myself. Richard told me the trust needed restructuring because the company was facing a financial crisis. He said the money could be invested temporarily, then returned with interest.””
“You expected me to believe that?””
“I expected you to trust me.””
I looked at the ring on her finger.
“Why did you tell my daughter that her mother would be angry with her?””
Vanessa glanced down.
“I was upset.””
“You were frightening a six-year-old.””
“She was going through my things!””
“She was looking for her mother's music box.””
“And she found documents that could destroy everything.””
I leaned forward.
“Everything you built on lies.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, I loved you before Emily died.””
I said nothing.
“I did. I watched you build your family. I watched you love her in a way I had never experienced. I was happy for you, even when it hurt.””
“Then why?””
“Because I wanted a family of my own.””
“You could have had one without hurting my daughter.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand. I spent years watching you give Emily everything. The house.
The company. The life I wanted. Then she died, and suddenly I was the person who could help you.””
My stomach turned.
“Was that why you came to the funeral?””
“No.””
“Was that why you started helping me with the business?””
“No.””
“Was that why you asked me to marry you?””
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she said, “I loved you. But I also knew you needed me.””
The honesty was worse than another lie.
She had understood my grief and used it to make herself indispensable.
She had brought groceries when I forgot to eat, sat beside me during sleepless nights, and comforted Lily when my own sadness made it difficult to function.
Some of those moments might even have been genuine.
But every kindness now carried a question.
Had she helped because she loved us?
Or because she was slowly securing a place in our lives that no one would think to question?
“Did you follow Emily the night she died?”” I asked.
Vanessa's face changed.
“Who told you that?””
“My father.””
She stared at me.
“Your father is lying.””
“He admitted he was in the SUV.””
Her mouth fell open.
For the first time since she entered the room, she looked truly shocked.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa leaned back.
Then she laughed.
It was a small, bitter sound.
“Of course he did. He'll say anything to save himself.””
“Were you driving?””
She looked away.
“Daniel, I don't want to answer questions without my lawyer.””
“Then answer one question as the woman who said she loved me.””
She remained silent.
“Did you cause Emily's death?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“Did you follow her?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Richard wanted the documents back. Emily had copies of the financial records, and she was threatening to take them to the police.””
“So you chased her.””
“I was trying to talk to her.””
“In the rain, on a highway?””
“She wouldn't stop!””
I felt my hands curl into fists.
“Did you hit her car?””
“No.””
“Did you see the crash?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
For several seconds, she didn't speak.
Then she whispered, “I saw her car leave the road.””
“Did you stop?””
“Yes.””
“Did you call emergency services?””
“I tried.””
“You tried?””
“My hands were shaking. I couldn't get the phone to work.””
“Did you tell the police you had been following her?””
“No.””
The admission came so quietly that I almost missed it.
“Why?””
“Because Richard said we would all be ruined.””
I stood up.
“You let me believe my wife died in an ordinary accident.””
“I didn't kill her!””
“You watched her crash, then lied about what happened!””
Vanessa began crying.
“I was terrified!””
“So was Emily!””
The door opened, and Detective Harris stepped inside.
“Mr. Whitmore, please sit down.””
I remained standing for another second, then lowered myself into the chair.
Harris looked at Vanessa.
“Ms. Cole, you have the right to stop this conversation at any time. Are you willing to continue?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Yes.””
“Did you inform the police that you were following Emily Whitmore on the night of the collision?””
“No.””
“Did you tell Daniel Whitmore that Emily had been alone in the car?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn't want him to know I had been there.””
Harris wrote something in his notebook.
“Did Richard Cole instruct you to follow Emily?””
“Yes.””
“Did he instruct you to withhold that information from the police?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And the financial documents?””
“He told me to retrieve them.””
“Did he instruct you to change Lily Whitmore's trust?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Harris looked up.
“Who did?””
Vanessa stared at the table.
“I did.””
My breath caught.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could fix everything.””
“By transferring the money?””
“Richard owed money to several investors. He said the company would collapse if he couldn't pay them. He promised the money would be returned.””
“You forged Daniel's signature?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Harris set down his pen.
“Thank you. That is an important admission. We will need to verify it through the documentary evidence.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Daniel, please. I know what I've done. But I never intended to hurt Lily.””
I thought of the bruises on my daughter's wrist.
“You told a six-year-old that her mother didn't want her to know the truth.””
“I was angry.””
“You told her I would abandon her if she spoke.””
“I didn't mean it.””
“You held her so tightly she couldn't cry.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“I didn't know how to stop everything from falling apart!””
I stared at her.
“You could have stopped by telling the truth.””
She reached across the table.
I moved my hand away.
“Daniel, I love you.””
“No. You loved the life you thought you could take from me.””
Her face crumpled.
I stood up.
“I'm done.””
As I reached the door, Vanessa called after me.
“Daniel!””
I stopped, but I didn't turn.
“There is something you need to know about Emily.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“She wasn't the only person who knew about the trust.””
I turned slowly.
“What are you talking about?””
“Someone helped me change the documents. Someone who knew your signature, your accounts, and the way your father handled the company.””
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward Detective Harris.
Then back at me.
“James.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My brother had taken Lily to the police station. He had found Emily's letter. He had helped me search the house and had stood beside me when I thought I had lost everyone.
“You're lying,” I said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“He gave me the access codes. He knew where the original documents were. He told me which accounts could be changed without triggering an alert.””
“Why would he do that?””
“Because Richard promised him a share of the company.””
I stared at her.
Then Detective Harris stood.
“Ms. Cole, we're going to pause this interview until your attorney arrives.””
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
She took out my engagement ring, slid it across the table, and whispered, “Ask your brother what he did the night Emily died.””
I walked out of the interview room with the ring in my pocket and a terrible feeling growing in my chest.
James had been with Lily all night.
He had helped me.
He had protected her.
But Vanessa knew details about the trust that only a handful of people could have accessed.
And if my brother had been involved, then the danger to my daughter had been closer than I ever imagined.
My phone rang.
It was James.
“Daniel,” he said, “where are you?””
“At the station.””
“Good. Listen, I need you to come home. There's something I found in Emily's old desk that I didn't tell you about.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“A second letter.””
My heart began pounding.
“What does it say?””
James took a shaky breath.
“It says that if anything happens to Emily, I should never let Dad or Vanessa take Lily.””
I closed my eyes.
“James, why didn't you tell me earlier?””
His voice broke.
“Because the letter says something else.””
May you like
“What?””
“It says I was the one who helped Vanessa access the trust.””
