Chapter 3: The Call That Changed Everything

I had known Daniel Brooks for seventeen years.

We met in college, shared a cramped apartment during our first jobs, and built our careers side by side.

When my father died, Daniel was the person who sat with me through the night.

When my first company collapsed, he lent me money without asking when I would repay it.

When I met Vanessa, he had been the first person I introduced her to.

He was more than my best friend.

He was family.

So when he admitted he had called Emily on the night she died, I felt something inside me shift.

“What did you tell her?”” I asked.

Daniel looked down.

“Marcus, not here.””

I gave a bitter laugh.

“Apparently, this is where everyone tells me things aren't suitable to discuss.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I called because Emily had discovered something about the company.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That's enough.””

I turned toward him.

“Not another word.””

Richard looked toward the guests.

“This is getting out of control.””

“Then leave.””

He started walking.

Two of the hotel's security officers moved toward the exit.

Daniel caught my shoulder.

“Don't let him go yet.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because he was there too.””

The ballroom seemed to tilt.

“Where?””

“At Emily's house.””

Richard stopped walking.

His face changed.

Daniel took a breath.

“Marcus, I didn't tell you because Emily asked me not to.””

“Tell me what?””

He glanced toward Lily.

Then toward Evelyn.

“Can we take this somewhere private?””

I looked at the little girl.

She was holding the USB drive with both hands.

“No,” I said.

“Not anymore. Everyone has been protecting secrets while this child has been carrying the truth alone.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Oh, this is absurd. You are allowing a child to dictate your entire life.””

I turned toward her.

“You have one chance to tell me what happened.””

She folded her arms.

“I loved you.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“I built a life with you.””

“You built a lie.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked like the woman I had intended to marry.

Then she said something that changed my understanding of the entire relationship.

“Emily was trying to destroy us long before she died.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because she knew about Richard.””

“And you?””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel answered.

“Because Emily found the financial transfers.””

Richard laughed sharply.

“Daniel, you need to stop talking.””

But Daniel had already started.

“Three weeks before the accident, Emily called me. She had been reviewing some documents for Marcus. She noticed that money was being moved from the hotel development account into a company registered under a different name.””

I frowned.

“What company?””

“Northbridge Consulting.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Daniel continued.

“The company received almost two million dollars over fourteen months. Emily traced the payments and found that it belonged to Vanessa.””

I looked at my bride.

She didn't deny it.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“It was a legitimate consulting arrangement.””

“Did you tell me about it?””

“You were busy.””

“That isn't an answer.””

She looked at Richard.

Richard stepped forward.

“Marcus, the money was part of a business strategy. It was going to be returned.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Emily was threatening to make a scene.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn't what happened.””

He explained that Emily had found irregularities in several property transactions. She believed Richard and Vanessa were using my company to purchase properties through shell businesses, then selling them at inflated prices.

The money was being moved through multiple accounts.

If the scheme succeeded, the company would appear profitable until the final transfer.

Then I would inherit the debt.

Vanessa and Richard would own the valuable assets.

I looked at Richard.

“Did you do this?””

He shrugged.

“You don't understand how complicated corporate finance can be.””

I took a step closer.

“I understand enough to know that you stole from me.””

Richard's face hardened.

“You signed every major agreement yourself.””

The words struck me.

He was right.

I had signed the documents.

I had trusted him to prepare them.

Vanessa had encouraged me to stop worrying about administrative details and focus on expanding the business.

I had handed them the keys.

Daniel continued.

“Emily found the original ownership records. She wanted to tell you, but Vanessa knew about it. That's why she went to Emily's house.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened after that?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing happened. Emily was upset, and I left.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“That's not true.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

“I kept the original call records.””

He showed me the screen.

There were three calls to Emily on November 17.

The first at 8:31 p.m.

The second at 9:06 p.m.

The third at 9:19 p.m.

“Why did you call her three times?”” I asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she called me first. She said Vanessa had taken the documents and threatened her.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's ridiculous.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She asked me to meet her. I drove to her house, but when I arrived, she wasn't there.””

“Where was she?””

“Her car was gone.””

My throat tightened.

“What happened next?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Your mother called me again. She was crying. She said she had proof that Vanessa and Richard were working together. She told me to take care of Lily if anything happened.””

Lily began sobbing.

I reached for her hand.

Daniel continued.

“I told her to call the police. She said she couldn't because she had been warned that Richard had friends in the department. Then she said something I will never forget.””

“What?””

“She said, 'Daniel, if Marcus marries Vanessa, Lily will never be safe.''”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing perfectly still.

No tears.

No trembling.

Just a cold, fixed expression.

Then Daniel revealed the part he had hidden from me.

“Marcus, I didn't tell you everything because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He looked toward the exit.

“Because someone followed me home after Emily's funeral.””

Richard smiled.

“People get paranoid after tragedies.””

Daniel's hand trembled.

“I found a tracking device under my car. Two days later, someone broke into my apartment and stole Emily's original documents.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought they would hurt you too.””

I looked toward Lily.

The little girl was watching us.

Her small fingers were gripping the white USB label.

I crouched.

“Lily, did your mother leave anything else?””

She nodded.

“There's a message.””

“What message?””

“Mommy recorded it for you.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Lily pointed at the laptop.

“It's in the last folder.””

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the equipment.

Daniel caught her before she reached it.

“Don't touch it!””

She struggled violently.

“LET ME GO!””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa, what are you so desperate to hide?””

For the first time, she didn't answer.

The DJ opened the final folder.

A video appeared.

Emily's face filled the screen.

She looked exhausted, frightened, and much thinner than I remembered.

But she was alive.

And she was looking directly into the camera.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

“If you're watching this, it means I couldn't stop them.””

Then she paused.

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“There is something you need to know about Lily.””
