Chapter 7: The Man Who Disappeared Before Daniel Arrived

Detective Collins didn't tell me what she thought the photograph meant.

She simply placed it inside a clear evidence sleeve and asked me to forward the original email without deleting it.

“Don't contact the sender,” she said.

“We need to establish whether this person has firsthand knowledge or is trying to manipulate the investigation.””

I nodded.

But the name Richard Cross stayed with me.

I'd never heard of him before.

I'd never met Daniel Cross before that night, either.

Yet someone had sent me a photograph of a man who might have been connected to both of them, along with a warning about the last person who trusted my wife.

I returned to Maya's room.

She was asleep again, one hand resting on the stuffed rabbit I'd given her years ago.

I pulled a chair beside her bed and watched her breathe.

For the first time in my life, I was afraid of the ordinary things I'd taken for granted.

A glass of water.

A bottle of vitamins.

A signature on a form.

The woman who kissed me goodbye in the morning.

I didn't know what had happened to Richard Cross, but I knew I couldn't keep pretending that trust was the same as certainty.

The next morning, a pediatric specialist explained that Maya needed continued monitoring and further assessment. Her condition had stabilized enough for the team to discuss the next steps, but they weren't ready to send her home.

I was relieved.

Then I remembered that home might not be safe.

Elena, the hospital social worker, arranged a meeting with Detective Collins and a child safeguarding representative.

They explained that the authorities were reviewing the alleged guardianship document and the planned trip. They were also checking whether Daniel Cross had any legitimate authority to collect Maya.

“He has no authority that I'm aware of,” I said.

“That's what we're verifying,” Detective Collins replied.

“Until the situation is clearer, please don't arrange any private meeting with him or your wife.””

I agreed.

Then the detective placed another document on the table.

It was a business registration record for a company called Cross Family Support Services.

The listed director was Daniel Cross.

The company described itself as a provider of family transition assistance and temporary guardianship coordination.

I read the description twice.

“That's what he does? He arranges for people to take children?””

“We're still establishing the nature of his activities,” Detective Collins said.

“The company description alone doesn't establish wrongdoing.””

“Then why was he carrying a document with my forged signature?””

“That is one of the questions we're investigating.””

She turned the page.

A second company was listed at the same business address.

Its name was Northstar Medical Consulting.

The director was a woman named Evelyn Price.

Detective Collins explained that investigators were checking whether the company had any connection to the medical assessment included in the insurance application.

I looked at the address.

It was in a neighboring county.

The same county where Claire had told me she was attending a wellness retreat the previous month.

I felt the familiar coldness settle in my chest.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“Have you found Richard Cross?””

“Not yet. We're verifying the identity and looking into the circumstances of the photograph.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

David.

I answered immediately.

“What's happened?””

“Mark, someone came to my house last night.””

I stood.

“Who?””

“A man in a gray car. He didn't get out at first. He just sat outside watching the house.””

“Did you call the police?””

“Yes. They took a statement.””

“Did you recognize him?””

“No. But when he drove away, I noticed something on the back window.””

“What?””

“A sticker. A silver compass.””

I looked at the business registration.

The Cross Family Support Services logo displayed a silver compass.

“David, did you tell anyone about the documents you found?””

“Only you.””

“Did you send anything to Claire?””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“Mark, I think someone knows I've been talking.””

I lowered my voice.

“Don't go anywhere alone. Save the police report and any camera footage. Let the investigators know about the sticker.””

“Okay.””

He hesitated.

“There's something I haven't told you about Richard Cross.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

“Daniel introduced himself to me using another name.””

I gripped the phone.

“What name?””

“Richard.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes. When I first met him, he said his name was Richard Cross. Then, a week later, Claire started calling him Daniel.””

“Did you ask why?””

“I did. She said Richard was his legal name and Daniel was the name he used professionally.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did you believe her?””

“I didn't think much about it at the time.””

“David, you need to tell the detectives everything. Every meeting, every message, every name.””

“I will.””

I ended the call and immediately informed Detective Collins.

She didn't react with the shock I expected.

Instead, she wrote down both names and asked whether David would be willing to provide a formal statement.

“Yes,” I said.

“He will.””

“Good. We'll arrange that through the appropriate channel.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The older man outside the courthouse.

Richard Cross.

Could he be the same man who had introduced himself to David?

Or was Daniel using someone else's identity?

I had no answers.

But I had a growing list of questions, and every one of them led back to Claire.

Later that morning, Maya woke and asked whether she could speak to me privately.

I sat beside her.

“Of course.””

She stared at the rabbit in her lap.

“Dad, I remembered something about Daniel.””

I waited.

“He came to our house once when you were away.””

“When?””

“Last month. Mom said he was fixing something with the bank.””

“What did he do?””

“He sat in the kitchen and talked to Mom. They had papers spread all over the table.””

“Did he speak to you?””

Maya nodded.

“He asked if I liked my school. Then he asked if I would like to live somewhere with a swimming pool.””

My throat tightened.

“What did you say?””

“I said I wanted to stay at home.””

She rubbed the rabbit's ear.

“He said children sometimes have to go where adults decide.””

I felt anger rise, but I kept my voice steady.

“Did he touch you or give you anything?””

“No.””

“Did he ask you to keep the visit secret?””

Maya nodded.

“He said it would be a surprise.””

I thanked her for telling me and let her rest.

I didn't ask for more.

Instead, I told Elena what Maya had shared so the information could be documented appropriately.

That afternoon, Detective Collins returned with an update.

The insurance company had confirmed that a substantial policy application had been submitted in my name. They were reviewing the authorization records and had flagged irregularities in the medical assessment.

The insurer had not yet determined whether the policy was valid or whether a claim had been made.

But investigators had discovered a separate document suggesting that Claire had recently inquired about what would happen to the policy if I became incapacitated.

I stared at the page.

“Did she tell them I was sick?””

“The records indicate she provided information about your health,” Detective Collins said.

“We need to establish whether those statements were accurate and who supplied the supporting documents.””

“Can I see the medical assessment?””

“We're requesting the original records.””

I rubbed my face.

“I never attended that clinic.””

“We've documented your statement. We'll verify it independently.””

Then she handed me another sheet.

It was a list of recent payments to Cross Family Support Services.

Three payments had come from our joint account.

The total was nearly twenty thousand dollars.

“What did she pay them for?””

“The descriptions refer to consultation services and travel coordination. We haven't established exactly what was provided.””

I looked at the dates.

One payment had been made the day before Maya first complained of stomach pain.

Another had been made the day Claire told me she was taking Maya to a friend's house for the afternoon.

The third had been made only four days before the planned Friday departure.

I looked up.

“Detective, I think she was paying someone to arrange my daughter's removal.””

“We're investigating that possibility.””

I wanted to ask more, but my phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from the same unknown address that had sent the photograph.

This time, there was an attachment.

A scanned letter.

The heading read:

*To Whom It May Concern: Medical and Family History of Mark Bennett.*

The letter claimed that I had suffered recurring episodes of confusion, fainting, and aggressive behavior. It stated that I was unable to provide reliable care for a minor child without supervision.

At the bottom was the signature of a physician I had never met.

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

It recommended that my daughter be placed temporarily under the care of Daniel Cross while my alleged condition was evaluated.

I handed the email to Detective Collins.

She read it carefully.

“This is significant. We'll need to authenticate the document and contact the named medical professional.””

“It's a lie.””

“We'll establish that through the records.””

I felt my hands shaking.

Claire hadn't merely been planning to take Maya away.

Someone had been building a paper trail to make it look as though I was unfit to care for her.

And if the documents were believed, I could have lost my daughter without ever understanding why.

Detective Collins turned toward me.

“Mark, there's one more thing. The clinic listed on the report has confirmed that a person using your name attended an appointment there.””

I stared at her.

“Someone impersonated me?””

“They're reviewing the appointment records and any identification used.””

I thought about the photograph of me asleep in my office.

The supplements Claire had given me.

The headaches and dizziness.

The forged signatures.

I had been trying to understand how my wife could arrange for our daughter to disappear.

Now I realized she might have been preparing the world to believe I deserved to lose her.

Then Detective Collins received a message on her phone.

She read it, looked at me, and said, “We've located someone who may be able to explain the name Richard Cross.””

“Who?””

“A former employee of Northstar Medical Consulting.””

May you like

She paused.

“His name is Richard Cross.””
