Chapter 9: The Accident That Wasn't an Accident

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything.

My father had died in a car accident.

That was the story I had known my entire life.

A rainy evening.

A dangerous curve.

A truck driver who had lost control.

My mother had told me he died instantly.

There had been a funeral.

There had been flowers.

There had been a closed casket.

And there had been twelve years of silence.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?””

She took a breath.

“I'm saying the accident report was incomplete.””

My mother stood.

“Stop.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Elaine, she deserves to know.””

“You don't get to decide that.””

“Margaret already did.””

My mother shook her head.

“You promised.””

Robert stepped between them.

“Enough. Lauren needs the facts, not another argument.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Robert sat down.

“Your father discovered that Thomas was using family assets to finance private investments. He confronted him and threatened to report the activity.””

“What happened?””

“Thomas arranged a meeting. Your father never came home.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Are you saying Thomas killed him?””

Robert looked at me.

“I can't prove that.””

Vanessa placed another folder on the table.

“But I can show you why the accident investigation was reopened.””

She removed a newspaper clipping.

The headline was dated twelve years earlier.

*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN DIES IN SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH.*

Beneath it was a photograph of my father's car.

The front end was destroyed.

I looked away.

Vanessa opened another document.

“This is a copy of the original accident report. It lists your father as the driver.””

“Then what's the problem?””

She pointed to the final page.

“Look at the hospital intake record.””

I read the name.

Unknown Male Passenger.

My hands began shaking.

“Who was driving?””

“We don't know,” Vanessa replied.

“The person who brought your father to the hospital disappeared before giving a statement.””

My mother started crying.

I turned toward her.

“Mom?””

She covered her mouth.

“Your father called me that night.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He said he was meeting someone. He told me not to worry.””

“Who?””

“Thomas.””

My stomach dropped.

“He was meeting Thomas?””

Elaine nodded.

“He said they needed to settle a disagreement.””

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“I did.””

Robert shook his head.

“Elaine, you told the police your husband had been home that evening.””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to protect Lauren.””

I felt as though the room had become unbearably hot.

“You lied?””

She started crying harder.

“I was frightened. Thomas told me that if I said anything, he'd make sure I lost custody of you.””

I stepped away.

“You let me believe Dad died in an ordinary accident.””

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

“From what?””

She couldn't answer.

Vanessa opened the folder again.

“There's one more piece of evidence.””

It was a photograph taken at the accident scene.

A second vehicle appeared in the background.

A black SUV.

The license plate was partially visible.

Daniel examined it.

“Can we identify the vehicle?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The plate belonged to a company registered to Thomas Reed.””

I stared at the photograph.

“So he was there.””

“We believe so.””

Robert leaned forward.

“Margaret suspected Thomas had been involved. She hired an investigator, but the investigator disappeared before completing the report.””

I looked at him.

“And you?””

Robert's eyes lowered.

“I was supposed to help her.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I was threatened.””

“By Thomas?””

Robert nodded.

“He knew where my family lived.””

I looked at all of them.

For twelve years, everyone had known pieces of the truth.

Everyone had been protecting themselves.

And I had been the only person left in the dark.

My phone rang.

Daniel checked the number.

“It's the police station.””

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What do you mean he left?””

I looked up.

“Who?””

Daniel ended the call.

“Marcus.””

My stomach tightened.

“He escaped?””

“He was released pending further investigation after his initial interview. He left the station with his attorney.””

I stood.

“Where is he?””

Daniel shook his head.

“We don't know.””

Vanessa quickly gathered the documents.

“We need to secure the trust records.””

Robert reached for the ledger.

“Take the original files. I'll make copies.””

Then my phone vibrated again.

A message from Marcus.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at it.

Another message appeared.

*I know about the account. I know about your father. And I know who really signed the transfer papers.*

Daniel took my phone.

“Don't respond.””

But another message arrived.

*If you want the truth, come to the old boathouse at ten tomorrow morning. Bring the original ledger.*

I looked at the time.

9:14 p.m.

“Why would he want the ledger?””

Vanessa answered.

“Because it contains the original transaction numbers. Without those, he can't prove where the money went.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He could be trying to destroy it.””

Robert looked toward the dark garden.

“Or he could be trying to trade it.””

I looked at my mother.

She was staring at Marcus's message.

“Mom, do you know who signed the transfer papers?””

Her face changed.

“Lauren…”

“Tell me.””

She slowly nodded.

“I do.””

My heart began pounding.

“Who?””

She looked at Robert.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“It was me.””

I felt the room spin.

“You signed the documents?””

“Not the ones Marcus submitted. The original authorization. Years ago.””

“Why?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Because Thomas told me it was necessary to protect the estate.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Elaine…”

My mother continued.

“But I didn't know he would use it against you.””

I stared at her.

“Was that your signature on the account?””

She nodded.

“I signed it under pressure.””

Daniel sat down.

“Elaine, we need to know exactly what happened.””

My mother looked at me.

“Your father discovered that Thomas had opened a secret account using your name. He confronted him. After the accident, Thomas came to me with a document.””

“What document?””

“A statement saying that your father had authorized the account.””

I couldn't breathe.

“And you signed it?””

She nodded.

“I thought it would protect you.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You gave Thomas the legal authority he needed.””

My mother began sobbing.

“I know.””

I stepped away from the table.

Everything had become clear.

Thomas had stolen the money.

Marcus had been brought in to transfer the property.

Vanessa had been trying to expose them.

And my mother had unknowingly helped them build the foundation.

But there was still one question.

Why had Marcus chosen me?

I looked at the message again.

*I know who really signed the transfer papers.*

I typed a response before Daniel could stop me.

*I'll be there.*

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“Lauren, no.””

I looked at him.

“I'm not going alone.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Neither am I.””

Robert picked up his cane.

“Then we go prepared.””

My mother stepped forward.

“I'm coming too.””

I stared at her.

“You've had twelve years to tell me the truth.””

“I know.””

“Why should I trust you now?””

She looked at me through tears.

“Because I can't undo what I did. But I can help you finish what your grandmother started.””

For a long moment, I said nothing.

Then I nodded.

The next morning, we would meet Marcus at the boathouse.

But before we could leave, the house security system sounded.

One long alarm.

Then the front camera displayed a vehicle entering the driveway.

A familiar black SUV.

The same vehicle from the photograph of my father's accident.

May you like

Vanessa whispered:

“Thomas is here.””
