Chapter 8: My Mother Finally Told the Truth
I stepped backward.
The words felt impossible.
"You gave Marcus the key?""
My mother nodded.
"Three years ago.""
"Why?""
She began crying.
"Because he told me your father was going to destroy the family.""
I stared at her.
"What family?""
"The Morgan family. Our family. Everything your father had built.""
David crossed his arms.
"Tell her the whole story, Eleanor.""
My mother looked at him.
"You have no right to judge me.""
"I've spent three years trying to understand what happened.""
"And I've spent three years living with it.""
Her voice broke.
I reached for her hand.
"Mom, please. Start from the beginning.""
She sat down.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the floor.
Then she began.
Three years earlier, my father had been investigating suspicious transfers connected to the Sterling Group.
He had discovered that several million dollars were being moved through consulting companies that existed only on paper.
One of those companies was controlled by Marcus Cole.
At the time, Marcus had been working closely with Vanessa, who was managing donor relations for the Sterling Foundation.
But Marcus wasn't acting alone.
He had approached my mother with documents suggesting that my father was planning to transfer most of his business interests away from the family.
He claimed my father had become unstable.
He told her the company was in danger.
And he convinced her that accessing the private office would help prevent a financial disaster.
"I believed him," my mother whispered.
I stared at her.
"You believed a man you barely knew over Dad?""
"He showed me documents with your father's signature.""
"Fake documents?""
"I didn't know that.""
David interrupted.
"Did Marcus tell you what he wanted from the office?""
My mother nodded.
"He said he needed a ledger.""
"What ledger?""
"The original transaction book. Michael kept handwritten notes about certain accounts because he didn't trust the digital system.""
David's expression changed.
"Did he find it?""
"I don't know.""
My mother wiped her cheeks.
"But the night I gave him the key, I heard an argument.""
I leaned forward.
"Between whom?""
"Your father and Marcus.""
The room became silent.
"Where?"" I asked.
"At the office.""
"Did you see them?""
"No. I was outside.""
"Then what happened?""
My mother looked at David.
"He arrived shortly afterward.""
David's face tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me that night?""
"Because Marcus threatened Ethan.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
My mother began shaking.
"He told me that if I went to the police, he would make sure Ethan never received the treatment he needed.""
I felt sick.
"How did he know about Ethan?""
"He knew everything. Where we lived. Which hospital he visited. Which doctors treated him.""
My mother reached for my hand.
"I was terrified.""
I pulled away slightly.
"Did you know Dad was going to die?""
She shook her head violently.
"No. Claire, I swear to you. I never wanted that.""
"Then what happened?""
She looked toward David.
"He told me Michael was dead before the police called.""
David went completely still.
I turned toward him.
"What?""
My mother continued.
"Marcus called me at 10:15. He said there had been an accident. He told me not to mention the office key.""
David's face had become pale.
"That call came before the official notification?""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
David walked toward the cabinet.
"Do you still have the number?""
"I changed phones years ago.""
"Did you save the message?""
My mother hesitated.
Then she opened her handbag and removed an old phone.
"I kept this.""
She handed it to David.
He examined the device.
"Why?""
"Because I knew one day I might need to prove what happened.""
He connected it to a secure computer.
A moment later, a list of old messages appeared.
One message stood out.
*10:15 PM.*
Don't tell anyone about the key. Your family is safe as long as you stay quiet.
The sender's number was hidden.
David looked at the screen.
"Can we trace this?""
"Possibly.""
He turned to me.
"Claire, there's something else.""
I closed my eyes.
"Of course there is.""
"Your father left another recording.""
My mother looked up sharply.
"David.""
He turned toward her.
"She needs to hear it.""
"No.""
"Why not?""
My mother stood.
"Because Michael didn't want her involved.""
"He transferred control of the company to her.""
"That doesn't mean—"
"It means she has the right to know.""
I looked between them.
"What recording?""
David opened a secure folder.
Inside was an audio file dated three years earlier.
He pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then my father's voice.
"David, if you're hearing this, I haven't been able to finish what I started.""
My knees weakened.
It was him.
My father's voice.
The same deep, familiar voice that used to read bedtime stories to Ethan.
"Marcus has been moving money through the Sterling Foundation. But he's not the person making the final decisions.""
A pause.
Then:
"Someone with access to the Morgan family trust has been authorizing the transfers.""
David looked at my mother.
She covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
"I suspect someone close to me has been manipulated. I don't know whether they're involved willingly.""
My father's voice became quieter.
"But there's one thing I know. The person responsible has been trying to obtain Claire's voting rights.""
I stared at the screen.
"Why mine?""
The recording continued.
"If they control Claire's shares, they control the company. And if they control the company, they can erase every record of what happened.""
A door slammed in the background.
Then my father's voice changed.
"Someone's here.""
A second voice appeared.
A man's voice.
"Michael, give me the ledger.""
David stopped breathing.
My mother grabbed the edge of the table.
I leaned closer.
The man's voice was unmistakable.
Marcus Cole.
My father answered:
"You're not leaving with it.""
Then a crash.
A struggle.
And finally, a sentence that made the room go cold.
"You're making this much harder than it needs to be, Michael.""
The recording ended.
I stared at David.
"Where is the original?""
He pointed to the computer.
"That's the only copy we have.""
"Who else knows about it?""
"Nobody.""
My mother suddenly spoke.
"That's not true.""
I turned.
She was staring at the screen.
"Marcus knows.""
David frowned.
"How?""
"Because I heard him talking to Vanessa last month.""
My stomach tightened.
"What did he say?""
"He told her the recording had to disappear before the annual shareholder meeting.""
David straightened.
"When is that meeting?""
"Monday morning," my mother replied.
David checked his watch.
"Then we have less than forty-eight hours.""
I looked at him.
"What happens Monday?""
He answered carefully.
"The Sterling Group and Morgan Holdings are scheduled to approve a final merger agreement. If the forged documents are accepted, the voting rights attached to your father's shares could be transferred to an entity controlled by Marcus.""
"And if that happens?""
"They gain control of the combined company.""
I looked at my mother.
"Then why haven't they already taken the shares?""
David opened the trust file.
"Because your father's final instruction requires your signature.""
I understood.
They needed me.
They needed me to approve something.
And if I refused, they would lose everything.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"Claire, you cannot go to that meeting.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She whispered:
"Because Marcus knows where Ethan is.""
My phone rang.
The hospital.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A nurse's voice came through.
"Ms. Bennett, we need you to come to the hospital.""
My heart stopped.
"What's wrong?""
"It's about your brother.""
I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.
"What happened?""
The nurse hesitated.
"Someone came asking questions about his medical records. When we refused to release them, he claimed to be a member of your family.""
"Who?""
The nurse lowered her voice.
"He showed us a photograph of you.""
I felt David take the phone from my hand.
"What did the man look like?"" he asked.
The nurse described him.
David's expression changed.
I knew that expression.
He recognized the man.
May you like
And when he ended the call, he said:
"Marcus has found Ethan.""
