Chapter 3: The House My Father Left Behind

I ended the call without saying goodbye.
For several seconds, I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone in my hand.
My mother watched me.
"He knows," she whispered.
I looked at her.
"How?""
"Because he's been watching you for eighteen years.""
I stood and walked to the window.
Outside, Atlanta's morning traffic crawled past the gates of my property. A delivery truck stopped at the neighboring house. Somewhere down the street, a dog barked.
Ordinary life continued as though mine hadn't just split in two.
I turned back to Mom.
"Tell me everything you remember about Dad's accident.""
She looked down at her hands.
"Your father called me at 10:42 that night. He sounded frightened. I'd never heard him like that before.""
"What did he say?""
"He told me Daniel had stolen something from the company. He said he had proof, but he couldn't bring it home because Daniel knew where we lived.""
I sat beside her.
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I did. They questioned Daniel, but he said your father had been under financial pressure and was behaving erratically. They found alcohol in your father's system.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was he drinking?""
"Your father rarely drank. He hated driving after even one glass.""
She rubbed her thumb across the brass key.
"The police said he lost control on a wet road. The car struck a tree, and the fire destroyed most of the evidence.""
I remembered the funeral.
The closed casket.
Daniel standing beside me while I cried into his suit jacket.
He had told me that my father had loved me more than anything.
He had promised to help me become the man Dad had wanted me to be.
For eighteen years, I'd believed him.
"Why did you keep working with him?"" I asked.
Mom's eyes filled.
"Because I had no proof. Because you were fifteen and already devastated. Because every time I tried to investigate, something happened to frighten me away.""
"What kind of things?""
"Anonymous calls. Letters. Someone breaking into the house and leaving everything untouched.""
She looked toward the door.
"And then, six months ago, I found the first transfer.""
I frowned.
"The transfer to Vanessa's company?""
Mom nodded.
"I was sorting through some old bank statements when I noticed a payment from an account your father had established before his death. It had been dormant for years. Suddenly, money was moving through it again.""
"How much?""
"At first, only a few thousand dollars. Then the amounts grew.""
She handed me another sheet of paper.
The account number meant nothing to me.
The signature at the bottom did.
Daniel Price.
I stared at it.
"How did you get this?""
"I visited the bank. I told them I was your father's surviving beneficiary and requested information about the account. They refused at first, but an old employee remembered your father. He helped me locate the records.""
"Did you tell Vanessa?""
"No. I confronted Daniel.""
I stared at her.
"You confronted him alone?""
"I thought he would explain.""
"What happened?""
"He smiled. He told me grief had made me paranoid. Then he warned me that if I kept digging, I'd lose the only family I had left.""
I swallowed hard.
"And you still didn't tell me?""
Mom reached for my hand.
"I tried, baby. I called you that morning at your office. You said you were busy.""
The memory came back with painful clarity.
Can it wait until tonight, Mom? I'm swamped.
I looked away.
"I'm sorry.""
She touched my cheek.
"You couldn't have known.""
"But I should have listened.""
"You were building a life. I didn't want to frighten you with accusations I couldn't prove.""
I lowered my head.
For years, I'd thought the worst thing I'd done to my mother was move into a house across town and become too busy to visit as often as I should.
Now I wondered how many times she'd tried to warn me while I was busy building an empire on top of a lie.
A knock sounded at the door.
Detective Brooks entered.
"Mr. Carter, I need to speak with you downstairs.""
I stood.
"About Vanessa?""
"About both of them. We've contacted the district attorney's office. We're also arranging a medical examination for your mother.""
Mom rose carefully.
"I want to go with him.""
Detective Brooks nodded.
"Of course.""
Downstairs, Vanessa sat at the dining table with a female officer beside her. Her makeup had run, and her wedding ring glinted beneath the overhead lights.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Marcus, please. Just five minutes.""
I remained near the doorway.
"Talk.""
She looked at Detective Brooks.
"Can we have privacy?""
"No," the detective replied.
"You can speak with your attorney present, or you can choose not to answer questions. But you won't be alone with Mr. Carter while this investigation is ongoing.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Then she faced me.
"Daniel told me your company was in danger.""
"What company?""
"Carter Development Group.""
"My company is profitable.""
"Not according to him.""
I crossed my arms.
"What did he tell you?""
"That your father had borrowed money from people he couldn't repay. That the debts had never been settled. That the people who financed him were coming for you.""
"Why would that justify stealing from me?""
"He said the transfers were part of a settlement. He said the money would keep them away.""
"Did you believe him?""
She looked down.
"I wanted to.""
That answer hurt more than I'd expected.
Because it sounded honest.
"Did you know my mother was going to Briarwood?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Not at first.""
"When did you find out?""
"Daniel called me the night she disappeared. He said she'd found something dangerous and that she couldn't be allowed to tell you.""
"And you helped him?""
"I drove her there.""
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
"You drove my mother to that house?""
Vanessa's tears spilled over.
"Daniel said he only wanted to talk to her. He promised nobody would hurt her.""
"What happened when you arrived?""
"He told me to wait outside. I heard them arguing. Then I heard a crash.""
Mom's fingers tightened around my arm.
"What kind of crash?"" Detective Brooks asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. I went inside. Evelyn was on the floor, and Daniel was standing over her.""
Mom went pale.
I felt my blood turn cold.
"What did you do?""
"I told him to call an ambulance.""
"And?""
"He said if I called anyone, I'd go to prison with him.""
"So you left my mother there?""
Vanessa began crying harder.
"I was terrified!""
I stared at her.
"You left her there?""
"I thought he'd get her help!""
Mom's voice was quiet.
"You locked the door behind you.""
Vanessa looked up sharply.
"I didn't—"
"You locked the door.""
Mom's eyes were wet, but her voice had grown steady.
"I remember hearing you turn the key. I remember begging you to let me out.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I didn't know you were awake.""
"That makes it better?""
Nobody spoke.
I could barely look at her.
I had imagined infidelity, financial dishonesty, even the possibility that my wife had married me for money.
I had never imagined her abandoning my mother in a locked room.
Detective Brooks wrote something in her notebook.
"How did Mrs. Carter escape?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Mom answered.
"There was a loose panel behind the shelves. I found it after they left. It opened into a narrow maintenance passage. I crawled through it and got outside.""
She paused, breathing carefully.
"I walked until I reached a gas station. The clerk let me use his phone, but Daniel had taken my purse. I couldn't remember anyone's number except an old friend from church.""
"Why didn't you call Marcus?"" I asked.
"I tried. My phone was gone. I didn't know your number by heart because I'd always called you from my contacts.""
She looked ashamed.
"I was confused. I was hurt. I thought if I went to the police without the evidence, Daniel would find me again before they could protect me.""
"So you hid?""
"I hid until I could recover the envelope I'd left behind.""
Detective Brooks looked up.
"Where was it?""
"In a storage locker. I'd hidden the original documents there before confronting Daniel. He didn't know about it.""
I glanced at the black envelope.
"You had all this evidence and still came back here?""
"I came back because I knew you'd be home from your honeymoon eventually. And I couldn't let you spend another day believing I was dead.""
My throat tightened.
I took her hand.
"You should never have had to go through this alone.""
She squeezed my fingers.
"I know.""
Detective Brooks closed her notebook.
"We'll need to verify every detail. But this gives us grounds to pursue additional warrants. Mr.
Carter, I also recommend you secure your business accounts immediately and avoid contacting Mr. Price.""
"I won't contact him.""
"Good. Because if he's involved, he may already know we're looking into him.""
As if summoned by the warning, my phone vibrated.
A text message appeared from an unknown number.
Your mother should have stayed missing.
A second message followed.
Check your office safe before you call the police again.
I stared at the screen.
Detective Brooks read the messages over my shoulder.
"Don't respond.""
I handed her the phone.
She photographed the screen.
"Can you access your office remotely?""
"Yes.""
"Then do not. We'll arrange for officers to accompany you.""
But my mind was already racing.
My office safe held the original property deeds, corporate records, and several documents I'd inherited from my father.
If someone had accessed it, the consequences could be enormous.
Mom studied my face.
"What is it?""
I showed her the message.
She pressed her lips together.
"Then they found out about the key.""
I pulled the brass key from my pocket.
"Mom, why would someone threaten me over a safe at Briarwood if you already have the documents?""
She looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.
"Because the documents in my envelope are copies.""
I froze.
"Copies of what?""
"The original agreement is inside your father's safe. And the agreement doesn't just name Daniel.""
She reached for my hand.
"It names the person who paid him.""
Before I could ask another question, Detective Brooks's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then her face tightened.
"Understood. Secure the building and preserve the scene.""
She ended the call and looked at me.
"Mr. Carter, we have a problem.""
"What happened?""
"Officers have arrived at your corporate office.""
I waited.
She drew a breath.
"Someone broke into your office overnight. The safe is open.""
My heart sank.
"What was taken?""
Detective Brooks looked toward my mother.
"Everything inside.""
Mom closed her eyes.
Then she whispered the words that changed the entire investigation.
"They weren't looking for money.""
May you like
She looked directly at me.
"They were looking for the birth certificate.""
