Chapter 8: The Secret Margaret Took to Her Grave

The police searched the house until after midnight.

They photographed the fireplace, collected the scorched documents, and took statements from Marcus, Michael, and Jordan. An officer named Detective Laura Bennett listened without interruption as Marcus explained the missing trust funds, the forged signatures, and the doctor's allegations.

When he finished, she closed her notebook.

"Mr. Reed, I need to be careful about what I tell you. At this stage, we have allegations, suspicious financial records, and possible evidence tampering. We don't yet have proof of who caused Eleanor's death.""

Marcus handed her the bracelet and Margaret's note.

The detective examined the handwriting.

After the officers left, Marcus found Michael sitting on the stairs.

The boy had changed into his pajamas but hadn't gone to bed. His hands rested between his knees, and his gaze remained fixed on the dark hallway.

Marcus sat beside him.

"You should get some sleep.""

Then he asked the question Marcus had been dreading.

"If she knew something and kept it from me, I'll have to accept that," Marcus said.

Harold opened a locked cabinet and removed a large envelope sealed with red wax.

"Your mother came to see me six weeks before she died. She told me she'd made a terrible mistake by trusting someone connected to the hospital.""

"Who?""

"She wouldn't tell me. She said she needed more proof before making an accusation.""

Harold broke the seal.

Inside lay a handwritten letter a locked cabinet and removed a large envelope sealed with red wax.

Harold broke the seal.

Inside lay a handwritten letter, a bank statement, and a small flash drive.

He unfolded the letter and began reading.

Harold,

*If you are reading this, I have failed to repair the damage I helped create. I believed I was protecting Eleanor when I agreed to keep a medical matter confidential. I thought the hospital would correct the record, and I thought the family would be spared unnecessary pain, a bank statement, and a small flash drive.

He unfolded the letter and began reading.

Harold,

If you are reading this, I have failed to repair the damage I helped create. I believed I was protecting Eleanor when I agreed to keep a medical matter confidential. I thought the hospital would correct the record, and I thought the family would be spared unnecessary pain.

I was wrong.

Marcus gripped the arms of his chair.

Harold continued.

I authorized an emergency review of Eleanor's treatment after a hospital administrator told me there had been a medication discrepancy. I was not authorized to approve any change in her prescription. I did not change the order, but I allowed the hospital to use my credentials to access her records because I.

I did not change the order, but I allowed the hospital to use my credentials to access her records because I believed they were investigating a mistake.

After Eleanor died, I learned that someone had used my access to make the records appear legitimate. I was told that revealing the truth would destroy Marcus's career, expose the hospital to a lawsuit, and place Michael's inheritance at risk.

I chose silence.

Harold stopped reading.

Marcus could barely breathe.

"Did she know who did it?""

"She believed she believed they were investigating a mistake.*

"She believed she did. But she never gave me a name.""

"What was on the flash drive?""

Harold connected it to his computer.

A folder appeared containing scanned documents, several audio files, and a spreadsheet of payments.

One entry caught Marcus's eye.

The company's director was a man named Richard Hale.

Marcus knew the name.

Hale had been the hospital's chief operating officer. He had later resigned and taken a position with a private healthcare corporation.

"Is he still alive?"" Marcus asked.

Harold nodded.

"He's currently the chairman of the medical foundation where Eleanor volunteered.""

Marcus stared at the screen.

"He's the person my mother was protecting.""

He opened one of the audio files.

Margaret's voice filled the office.

She sounded tired, but unmistakably clear.

I know what you did, Richard. I know you changed the order. I know you used my credentials to make it look as though I approved it.

A man's voice answered.

You don't know anything. You signed the access authorization yourself.

I signed an authorization for a review. Not a prescription.

The distinction won't matter when the records are examined.

There was a pause.

Then Margaret spoke again.

Eleanor was a patient. She trusted us.

The man laughed softly.

The man laughed softly.

Eleanor was a problem. She discovered what we were doing with the research funds. She was going to expose the whole operation.

Marcus felt his blood turn cold.

The recording continued.

What did you give her? Margaret asked.

The man replied, The dose that was already in the system.

You changed it.

And you helped me make it look legitimate.

The recording ended.

Finally, Marcus looked at Harold.

"Why didn't my mother take this to the police?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

His mother hadn't necessarily caused Eleanor's death.

But she had allowed the truth to be buried.

She had chosen the family's reputation over the justice Eleanor deserved.

"There's another audio file," Harold said quietly.

He clicked on it.

This time, Sarah's voice emerged.

Richard, the money is transferred. The property documents are signed. But Marcus has started asking questions.

Hale answered, *Then caused Eleanor's death.

Hale answered, Then you need to stop him.

I can't keep doing this.

You can, and you will. You were the one who took Eleanor's letter. You were the one who moved the money. If you walk away now, I'll make sure the police know you helped me cover up the death.

Sarah's voice broke.

You told me the medication incident was an accident you need to stop him.

It was supposed to be an accident.

Marcus rose so quickly that his chair struck the wall.

Harold stopped the recording.

"That is enough for today," he said.

"We need to preserve the files and turn them over through the proper channels.""

Marcus nodded, his mind racing.

Sarah had not been the person who changed the prescription.

But she had known who did.

She had helped conceal it.*

But she had known who did.

She had helped conceal it.

And someone more powerful than her had been directing the entire scheme.

As Marcus reached for his coat, his phone rang.

It was Jordan.

"Dad, you need to come home.""

Marcus's stomach tightened.

"What happened?""

Jordan's voice trembled.

"Mom came back.""

"Where is she?""

"In the kitchen. She's crying. She says she wants to surrender.""

Marcus paused.

"Then don't argue with her. Keep your distance and call.

Jordan swallowed.

Marcus looked at the flash drive on Harold's desk.

"Why?""

Jordan's answer came in a whisper.

"Because she has the original recording of him admitting what he did to Eleanor. And he wants it back.""
